God's Grace
Chapter 3: Patience is a virtue
Disclaimer: Yep, still don't own this or the lyrics.
Joan's Room 2:47 a.m.
Something was buzzing right next to her head. It was buzzing and blinking in an incredibly annoying fashion. Cracking open one eye Joan was surprised to see her cell phone a half inch from her face. Who could be calling me at this hour, Joan thought. Oh, she realized as she looked at the caller id, it's HIM. Flipping the phone open she growled into the receiver.
"Do you realize what time it is?"
"Of course I do Joan." God replied in his slightly amused tone of voice.
"Can we keep this short please? My pillow is calling."
"Sure. Joan, I'm asking you to be patient."
"Oh this is an 'I told you so'".
"No Joan, I don't do that. Just think of it as an assignment."
"Right, okay, I'll do that."
"Bye Joan."
The phone clicked off and Joan buried her face in her pillow. Okay, so she should've listened when God had told her to leave it alone but she'd made her choice. She was really bothered by how badly her attempt at reconciliation had gone. Joan had been positive that she could get Grace and Adam to be friends again. Rolling over, she tried to forget about the coming school day and what she had to not do.
Arcadia High School 9:30 a.m.
Grace trudged through the halls bestowing her trademark glare on all who looked her way. And then brave or stupid soul was standing in her path.
"Oh it's you. Go away."
"Grace, just wait."
"Girardi!" Grace said warningly.
"Grace, I'm sorry."
"Why?" Grace replied skeptically.
"Because I am. I should've left you and Adam alone and I didn't and I made things worse and I'm really sorry." Joan finished in a rush.
"Fine. All is forgiven. Go forth and sin no more." Grace said sarcastically but Joan knew everything was better since Grace turned to walk with her. Breathing a deep sigh of relief, Joan launched into a story about the dream she had had last night that involved Orlando Bloom and whipped cream. Arriving at class meant a confrontation with Adam so Grace loitered in the hallway while Joan went in and took her seat next to Adam.
"Uh, Adam, can I talk to you for a minute?" Joan asked nervously. Adam just shrugged his shoulders and hunched down further in his sweatshirt. "I just want to apologize. I just wanted you and Grace to be friends again. I'm sorry that I made things worse. I don't want you to be mad at me again."
"Joan, Jane, uggg. Alright, we're cool. Just don't do that again."
"Unchallenged." Joan replied with a smile.
The bell rang and Grace reluctantly entered the classroom and took her seat. Luke turned around to watch her trying to elicit a smile but all he got was a angry look. Sighing deeply, he turned around to listen to Lishak's lecture. Joan on the other hand was more than pleased with herself and practically bubbled with the knowledge that she had her friends back. The rest of the class went by uneventfully and quickly emptied when the bell rang. Luke hung back waiting for Grace who was always the last to leave.
"Grace, can I talk to you?" Luke asked knowing he was likely to get his head ripped off.
"What do you want geek?" Grace responded in a revolted tone.
"I, uh, just, uh, wanted to make sure you were okay. Especially after yesterday."
"Whatever. I'm fine."
"You didn't seem fine yesterday."
"You must be confused. I don't know what you are talking about." Grace said and turned on her heel, effectively ending the conversation. Luke just hung his head and flopped into a seat. He never knew what to expect with Grace. She ran hot then cold and then hot again. Sighing he dropped his head onto the lab table and sent up a silent prayer to whoever was listening for a little help.
I am listening Luke and I hear you. I always hear you and everybody else. It's part of what I do. So many times people think I don't listen or don't answer but I always do. It's just that sometimes people don't like the answers I give them. My timing is perfect and so are my answers to people's prayers. Most people's lives would be a lot better if they would just listen to me. I give pretty clear directions about how to live a good life.
/Marvelous grace of our loving Lord
Grace that exceeds our sin and our guilt
Yonder on Calvary's mount out poured
There where the blood of the Lamb was split./
Stayed tuned for next week's chapter.
