Hello, Again

Prologue

June 2006

He hadn't seen her in three years, not since he told her he loved her, than said good-bye.

That's what made coming back, walking down the hallway towards her office both terrifying and exciting at the same time. Certainly when he left after that fateful WrestleMania, neither of them expected him to ever come back. Most of the doctors he'd spoken to had said that his neck was too messed up, too badly damaged to even consider one more match in the ring and that was before Kurt Angle decided to go ahead and drop the SMACKDOWN title to Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania XIX. Even after he'd gotten the surgery from Dr. Jho and started feeling better than he'd had in a long while he'd retired, figuring it was the best for his family and his wife in particular, even though he still had that want and desire to get in the ring and wrestle.

That want was probably what ultimately spell the end of his marriage.

Kurt Angle paused in his strides and closed his eyes. He told himself over and over that it wasn't anybody's fault that he and Karen were divorcing. They would ultimately remain friends and raise their daughter the best they could, despite living apart. They just weren't meant to be married anymore.

Of course telling himself that never eased the sting of failure Kurt felt at not being able to keep his family together.

He stepped in front of the door of the woman who he hoped would be his boss again. When he called to see if the WWF had any used for him getting back into the ring, he was half afraid that she wouldn't take his call or hang up on him without letting him speak. The fact that she agreed to meet with him was a good sign to him. He knocked on the door and waited.

"Come in," her voice called out from the otherside of the door. A voice he last heard whisper good-bye to him as Kurt left to face Brock in what both thought would be Kurt Angle's final match ever.

He opened the door to her office and took a few seconds to gaze at her, before he spoke his first words to her in three years.

"Hello, again, Stephanie," he greeted Stephanie McMahon.
