James woke up in the middle of the night. The clock on his bed-side table told him it was two o'clock. He moaned and buried his head under the pillow. Still, he couldn't sleep. He decided to visit the kitchens for some hot chocolate and cookies, hoping these will help. He got up and put on his invisibility cloak, then opened the door silently and left. Soon he was in the corridor that had a secret passageway to the kitchens. He was almost at the right portrait when he noticed a white envelope on the floor, behind the statue of three house elves holding a golden goblet. He picked it up and, as he had expected, it had James Potter written on it with a familiar neat handwriting. He put it into his pocket and decided to take the hot chocolate and cookies from the kitchen and then go back to Gryffindor common room and read the letter. So he did and after about half an hour he was sitting in his usual armchair by the fireplace, drinking his chocolate and reading the newest message of his secret lover.
"Dear James,
It's me again! Did you read today's "Daily Prophet"? In case you didn't, I'll give you a quick review about the events. There was a Death Eater attack last night at London. It was at the muggle theatre and about four or five muggles were killed, two of them children. When the aurors arrived, the Death Eaters didn't run away as usually but stayed and fought. Two aurors were killed and one seriously injured. But they managed to kill three Death Eaters and captured another two. They are being questioned right now but they haven't given any important information yet. Terrible, isn't it? I cried when I read about it. Poor children! But I don't want you to be depressed. After all, first Quidditch mach of the season, Gryffindor vs. Slytherin, is coming next week. I'm sure we'll win. I noticed you walking by the lake this evening. What were you doing there? Thinking, maybe? About what? What problems do you have? Can't think of any. But me, at the same time... Oh well, I don't even want to think about it. I hope you're doing well. I think it's time to go to sleep; after all, it's school tomorrow. All the best!
Love,"
James put the letter away and took the last sip from his mug. Who could this girl be? He hoped with all his might that it would be Lily, Lily Evans, the most beautiful and intelligent girl in the whole world. But that was impossible; Lily loathed him as much as he loved him. He sighed heavily and stood up. He better get some sleep before he has to wake up again. So he went back to his dormitory and fell asleep almost the moment his head touched the pillow.
