The three boys were sitting around the table at the common room, doing their homework. Peter was sent to the kitchens to bring some butterbeer and snacks. For some time, only muttering and scribbling of the quills was heard. Then, suddenly, James put his quill down and looked around. "Hey, guys," he said quietly, "I want to talk to you." "Sure," said Sirius, looking up from his Potions essay. "Here or somewhere else?" "Better somewhere else," said James and stood up. So did the others and the three of them headed out of the common room. Once they were standing outside the portrait, Remus turned to the others. "We could go to the Room of Requirement, if that suits," he said. "Perfect," said James and so they walked down the stairs, turned left, then right and after some time they were standing in front of the door that had just appeared from the solid wall. James reached his hand and opened the door, then walked in. So did the others and they looked around.

The room was warm and comfortable with a fire in the enormous fireplace and three big, deep, soft scarlet armchairs in front of it. The armchairs were around a wooden table which had bottles of butterbeer and pumpkinjuice, plates of cakes and cookies, bowls of apples and all sorts of candies on it, as well as some parchment, quills, bottles of ink and envelopes. The boys sat down.

"So," said Sirius, "what did you want to talk about?" James shifted in his armchair and started to speak. He told them all about the letters, that he was sure it had to be someone from the Gryffindor 7th years and finally he told who he hoped it to be. When he finished, Sirius and Remus glanced quickly at each other and shifted uncomfortably. "What?" James asked, looking back and forth between his two friends. "Nothing," said Sirius quickly and looked away. "What?" James asked now from Remus. "Well," he started, "the thing is, that we knew already. Actually, we were the ones who put the letters where you could find them." "Do you know who it is?" asked James. "No, I'm afraid not." answered Remus. "Then how could you get those letters?" asked James. "Well, you know the girl Sirius dates right now, Samantha?" "Yeah." "She once found the letter from her dormitory. She saw your name on it and thought it may be yours. So she brought it to Sirius next time they met. Sirius, curious as he is, read it through and showed it to me. And we thought it wouldn't do any harm if you saw it. I suggested we should show it to you right away but Sirius requested that we would let you to find it. And Sirius asked Sam to bring him all the letters she finds and so we have been playing Cupids, as Sirius said once."

"So, what should I do now?" asked James. "Isn't it obvious?" asked Sirius. "What?" "Write to her! Say that you have found the letter and you want to know who she is." James thought for a moment and smiled then. "Brilliant! I'll write right away." So he sat nearer to the table and pulled the parchment nearer. He also took the quill and put it into the inkbottle that had gold and scarlet ink in it.

"Dear mysterious girl,

I am James Potter and I have found your letters addressed to me. I would like to know who you are. Please write back soon!

Love, James."

He read it out loud and the other boys found the letter quite okay. So he folded the letter and put it into an envelope. On the envelope he wrote "To my mysterious writer, from J. Potter." He gave it to Sirius who promised to give it to Samantha as soon as possible and make sure the author of the letter gets it. So they grabbed some bottles and snacks from the table and headed back to the Gryffindor Tower.
