You'd Better Get Me To School On Time: chapter two

"Okay guys, give him some space to breathe," Dewey said firmly. After a moments hesitation, the group reluctantly moved back, save for Katie who was still knelt by Freddy's side, gently brushing his hair out of his face.

Slowly but surely, his eyes fluttered open, and Dewey let out a breath he did not realize he had been holding.

"You scared me there Freddy - you okay?"

"Don't know." His words came out as a dry croak and he started coughing. Dewey helped him up to a sitting position.

"That better?"

"No. . .I can't breathe - I can't breathe!" Freddy rasped, obviously beginning to panic.

"Okay dude, stay calm."

"I'm. . .so. . .cold. . .it's so cold. . ." With a little jolt of horror, Dewey realized that Freddy was shivering violently.

"Katie," he said to the girl still knelt at Freddy's side, "Try and keep him calm."

"Where are you going?" She asked.

"Opening up the van."

"Why?" Marta asked.

"I'm taking him to the hospital." An unnatural hushed silence filled the room.

"Okay, go then!" Summer snapped suddenly. Dewey disappeared from the room, and the others gathered around Freddy.

"Freddy man, you okay?" Zack asked. He immediately realized his mistake when Alicia threw him a murderous glance.

"Zack, that was really stupi -" Katie suddenly cut off mid-sentence.

"What is it?" Lawrence asked. Katie didn't answer but looked down at Freddy - who had stopped shivering, and now lay completely still.

"Freddy?" She said, shaking him gently. "Freddy, no, stay with us! Freddy!"

"What's wrong?" Marta yelped.

"He's not moving - I think he passed out again!" Tomika ran over to the window.

"DEWEY!" She yelled. Far below, on the side of the road, Dewey looked up. "He passed out again - something's really wrong!" With lightning speed, he darted inside. In a few seconds, he was back inside the room, and back at Freddy's side.

"What happened?" He asked.

"We don't know. . .he just. . .I don't know," Katie stuttered slightly. Frowning slightly, Dewey felt Freddy's forehead with the back of his hand. His eyes widened.

"What's wrong?" Zack asked.

"He's really burning up - we need to get him to hospital now!" Carefully, he scooped the unconscious boy up in his arms, and started downstairs. Everyone else ran down behind him, sharing horrified looks as they went. At the last minute, Marta dodged back and grabbed Freddy's drumsticks from where they had been abandoned on the floor.

Freddy moaned as soon as the cool outside air hit his burning skin, which, if anything, just started to scare them even more.

"Katie, you get inside first, then you can prop him up okay?" Katie nodded, and scrambled inside the van. Dewey sat Freddy inside so that his head was leaning on Katie's shoulder. "You okay like that?" She nodded. "Okay." He jumped in the front seat.

"Hey, what about us?" Summer protested.

"Well, I -"

"Freddy's not going anywhere without us," Alicia added. Dewey nodded. Everyone jumped in the back, uncomfortably aware of just how ill Freddy really was.

"How could this happen so quickly?" Tomika said quietly as they drove off. "He was okay about twenty minutes ago." Summer laid a comforting hand on her shoulder.

"He'll be okay Tomika," she said.

"How do you know that?" Katie said in a near-whisper, craning her neck to be able to look at the unconscious boy without having to move him.

"Trust us," Lawrence, with a half-forced smile. Katie hesitated, then nodded.

"You trust us?" Summer asked, also beginning to smile a little.

"I trust you."
