You'd Better Get Me To School On Time: chapter four

Dewey sighed with relief when he rounded the corner, and the hospital finally came into view. Nearly there, he thought. Nearly there. . .

"How's he doing?" He asked automatically.

"How do you think?" Summer snapped. Dewey blinked in surprise. "Sorry. I didn't mean to speak like that. I'm just worried about Freddy."

"That's okay Summer."

"In answer to your question - he's - um - well, he's not exactly getting any better." Dewey sighed again. While he hoped that wouldn't have been her answer, he somehow knew that was what she was going to say.

"Well, we're almost there."

"Thank God," Katie mumbled under her breath. Freddy had not uttered a word since he had mumbled his apology to his sister. Nor had he moved. His eyes were tightly shut and his body utterly limp.

"I'm guessing he's still got a fever." Katie lay her hand on Freddy's forehead. He was still burning up. In fact, Katie could feel the heat coming off of his skin even as she pulled her hand away.

"He has. And I think it's getting worse."

"How is that possible?" Marta said quietly, her eyes still red-rimmed from crying earlier. "How can it possibly get any worse?"

"Don't worry Marta, we're here anyway," Dewey replied. As he slowly drove into the car park, Katie started absentmindedly playing with Freddy's hair, twisting it up into little spikes. Summer watched with interest.

"Katie, what are you doing?" She asked as Dewey pulled the van into a space.

"What? Oh. . .I. . .I don't really know. . ." Summer raised an eyebrow then winced as the brakes squealed loudly.

"Can't you get them fixed?" She complained.

"Sorry!" Dewey apologised, unbuckling his seat belt. Summer turned back to Katie.

"Like I was saying - what are you doing?"

"I don't know - I guess it just makes him look more - uh -"

"Normal?" Katie shrugged - or as well as she could.

"For lack of a better word, yeah."

"Hey." Katie looked up to see Zack standing beside them, his hand on her other shoulder. "We're here. Let's go." Katie nodded, and carefully sat up as Dewey got out and pulled the side door open.

"Okay, how are we gonna do this. . ." He muttered to himself. "Okay, Katie, if you slide over -"

"Okay." She slid along the seat, trying to keep Freddy upright. It was a hard task, seeing as Freddy kept sliding off her shoulder.

"Careful there Katie," Dewey said, seeing Freddy beginning to fall again. "Careful - Katie!" Freddy slipped right off her shoulder, and his head hit the wall of the van with a dull thunk! Everyone visibly flinched.

"Sorry Freddy!" Katie gasped, shifting him back onto her shoulder again. Then she frowned slightly. "He's still not moving." Everyone shared concerned glances.

"Freddy? Can you hear me?" Dewey asked, worry beginning to show on his face. Of course, there was no reply. Katie shook the unconscious boy gently, hoping that might wake him up. All that happened was that his head fell back into the crook of her arm. Marta gasped.

"Oh my god," she said softly. Freddy was so pale that he looked nearly dead, but there was a pink tinge to his cheeks, because of his fever. There was also a red mark on the side of his head, from where he had hit it on the wall of the van.

Marta was not the only person who was horrified at Freddy's appearance. Zack, Lawrence and Alicia were frozen to the spot, and the others just looked at each other, completely shocked.

"Katie, slide down a bit more," Dewey said suddenly, making everyone jump. She did just that, and Dewey lifted Freddy up in his arms. "Someone lock up the van for me." He didn't wait for an answer as he bolted across the car-park towards the hospital entrance. Zack quickly slammed the door shut, then ran to catch up with the others.

They burst through the entrance doors in a panic, looking round for a doctor. One, a female, came running over when she saw the state Freddy was in.

"What happened?" She asked, feeling Freddy's forehead. No one missed the hiss she gave when she felt just how warm he really was.

"He said he wasn't feeling well, then he collapsed, and started getting a fever. . ." Katie babbled. The doctor nodded.

"Okay, follow me," she instructed. The group followed her over to a spare gurney, where Dewey laid Freddy down gently. His head fell to the side. The doctor stopped it by laying her hand gently on his cheek, and leaned over him. "What's his name?"

"Freddy Jones," Dewey replied.

"Freddy?" The doctor asked clearly. "Freddy, can you hear me? Can you open your eyes for me?" Freddy moaned softly. "Hmm. . .temperature is 103. . ."

"103?" Tomika whispered, amid gasps from the others. "I didn't think it was that bad. . ."

"Doctor Richardson, can you give me a hand here please?" The doctor called. A tall male doctor with scruffy brown hair came running over. The female doctor looked up. "If you just wait here, someone will be out in a minute." Before anyone had a chance to reply, the two doctors turned and pushed the gurney - with Freddy still upon it - through some doors - leaving the others standing in the middle of the hall.

"What do we do now?" Lawrence asked.

"I guess we wait," Dewey replied. Slowly, and in shock, everyone walked over to the waiting area and sat - and waited.

* KATIE'S P.O.V. *

Freddy has scared me so many times before. It's not really surprising, considering how long we've known each other, but still. . .

There was that time when we were four, and he freaked me out by tearing the head off of my barbie doll in front of me. Mind you, I think I freaked him out as well by biting him - don't think he liked that!

Then there was when we were seven, and he jumped up behind me when we were playing hide-and-seek at Michelle's birthday party. That was when I discovered just how loud I can really scream.

And then. . .oh god, when we were all eight and his little sister, Lisa died. . .God almighty, he scared all of us. He wouldn't talk to us. He became an empty shell, one who just wouldn't communicate. He loved Lisa so much, you see. Then to actually see her die. . .it's horrible to even imagine it. And he thought it was his fault. That's what he kept saying. Nothing we said could convince him otherwise.

He began to get better by the time we were all nine, though he was still incredibly upset about it. I don't think he'll ever truly get over it.

Then, not long ago, when we were at the concert and Zack accidentally knocked him down those steps. . .I'd never seen Freddy so still before! And poor Zack. He was so embarrassed. But hey, we all had a good laugh about it - once Freddy had woken up of course! But then. . .

When he collapsed earlier. . .I can't even remember it properly, I was that scared for him. I remember me screaming his name though. I also remember. . .I also remember him with his head on my shoulder. That was the point when I didn't know whether to be happy (in a sick sorta way) because - well, here was the guy I liked with his head on my shoulder! - or upset because we were taking him to the hospital.

All of those times - yeah they were pretty nasty. Especially after Lisa died. But strangely, I think the most I've ever been afraid for Freddy, in my entire life, was when those doctors took him away through the doors. And it's because I can't be with him now. All the other times - they sucked all right, but we were there with him. I was there with him. But now? Now I'm sitting on a hard plastic hospital chair, wondering where he is and is he okay? I don't know what's going on. That's why I'm so scared.

Freddy, please be okay.

A/N: Am I evil, or am I evil? No, really, am I? Well, tell me what you all thought - review!!!!!! Hopefully, I should be able to update by the end of the weekend. See you then!
