Summary-Short little fic about what Headmaster Dumbledore saw in the "Mirror of Erised" in the J.K. Rowling book, "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's stone-other than socks.
A/N- I have used a few lines of wording from the first H.P. book as a lead in to this fic. In no way am I attempting to plaugurize or steal anyone's hard work. Thank you. I will mark said areas by beginning and ending the passage with ^. Thank you for not sueing. This fic was directly inspired by "The Heir of Paravel's" piece, "We fools who Love" over on Portkey.org. Go check it out!
***** ^ Harry stood up.
"Sir- Proffesor Dumbledore? Can I ask you something?"
"Obviously, you've just done so," Dumbledore smiled. "You may ask me one more thing, however."
"What do you see when you look in the mirror?"
"I? I see myself holding a pair of thick, woolen socks."
Harry stared.
"One can never have enough socks," said Dumbledore. ^
I looked at young Harry Potter as I delivered that last bit knowing that he did not realize that I had been stretching the truth a little bit. After I had escorted him back to his dormitory and put him to bed I made my way to my office, trying to hold back an old fool's tears.
If only I could let him know! If only there was a way to protect him from what he would be facing as the years marched on! I had been turning the prophecy over in my head the day I had seen him enter the great hall. Trying desperately to think of a way to circumvent the danger in his future, to remove the terrible burden on his shoulders.
But, no. Even an old fool such as myself knows the dangers of challenging destiny.
Even so, when his eyes had looked into mine, asking about what I saw....
When I look into the Mirror of Erised, I see a whole world changed. I see a handsome young man of seventeen proudly accepting his wizarding certificate with his best friends at his side. All of them happy and healthy, unburdened by the evil that lives in this world. With a grin on his face he goes out into a world free of darkness with a willing accomplice and a loving girlfriend every step of the way, Mr. Weasley on his arm, Ms. Granger in his hands.
He will do good things, as will they, and I will do everything in my power to make it so.
Oh, and of course I see myself with a nice thick pair of woolen socks, keeping these old feet warm.
