Daniel was whistling as he removed his jacket and threw it over the hall chair. The bright lights throughout his cheery house were a contrast to the gloom of the rainy evening outside. He tuned his ear. Kids were watching the telly and Susan was cooking dinner in the kitchen. He smiled. It was his favorite time of day.
Susan was reaching into a lower cupboard. Sneaking up behind, he slipped his hands into the back pockets of her beige trousers. As she straightened, she twisted and lifted her face to his for a peck. "Naughty boy," she said removing his hands from her buttocks and turning to face him. "We have a visitor, remember?"
He drew her closer. "She's in the other room with boys. What's wrong? Aren't you happy to see me?"
"Always, luv," and they kissed, this time lingering a bit to enjoy the moment. "Now go wash up. Dinner's almost ready."
Daniel obediently broke the short embrace. Stepping up to the kitchen sink, he let the water run over his outstretched hands.
"What's wrong?" he asked, watching his wife of fifteen years out of the corner of his eye.
She gave him withering look. "Nothing is wrong. But..."
"Mac's not your typical 'stray'?" he guessed.
"Daniel, we have fed hundreds over the years. None that looked like her." She started to fill the plates with boiled potatoes, gravy and chopped steak.
"The boys seem to like her."
The withering look was repeated. "She's a US marine colonel! It's like having Superman appear at our door."
"Mac helped me clean up the churchyard. This afternoon, she sorted used clothing for the store. Remember those bins that came in last week? The ones you didn't have time for?" His tone was reproachful.
Susan shook her head "We've had strays before. Through the church. Men down on their luck. She's not down on her luck! Those shoes are worth more than the Volvo!"
"Susan, the Volvo is sixteen years old. There are a lot of things worth more than it."
"Still!"
"Maybe she just likes helping out?"
"Maybe, " said Susan unconvinced.
"Maybe she's impressed with my manly body and is trying to steal me away from you," he said, bending in to sneak another kiss.
"Oh, that's it for sure," she said, rolling her eyes. They both laughed.
"Thank you for this," Daniel said. "What would I do without you?"
"Grab a couple of plates, Keanu Reeves and help me bring them to the dining room. We need to feed your American marine colonel," said Susan.
"Aye, aye, dear," replied Daniel.
