HOME

Everyone was gonna be there. Everyone. At least the ones alive. Krit. Max. Zane. Jondy. Jace. Even Brin. But Tinga wouldn´t. Nor would Ben. Or Eva. Or Jack.

The buss was taking me to Seattle. Suddenly I remembered my last visit. Zack wouldn´t be there either.

I got off the buss. I couldn´t go there. I couldn´t face all of them. I couldn´t see Max and know the heart bounding inside of her was Zack´s. I hated her for being alive instead of him. And I hated myself for hating her.

I got myself a cheap motel room and dialled the number I had gotten from Krit.

"Krit, it´s me, Syl."

"Hi, sis!"

"Yeah, listen, I changed my mind. I´m not coming."

"What?"

"You heard me. I´m not coming."

"What d´you mean you´re not coming? Of course you´re coming! Everyone´ll be there!"

"Not everyone."

"Syl-"

"I´ve made up my mind."

"Hey, sis, they really wanna see you."

"I know. I just can´t. Not yet."

"You haven´t seen them for over ten years. Don´t you think it´d be time?"

"Just tell them I´m sorry."

"Not good enough."

"I gotta go."

"Syl-"

All night I kept checking the time. Now they had probably finished eating. They would be sitting next to each other, talking about the past ten years, drinking wine. I wondered what they´d look like. Did they have families? Kids? We´re they happy?

"Miss?"

I looked up. Some annoying motel worker. Why hadn´t I chosen a place with no service at all?

"What?"

He handed me a phone. "Someone´s asking you, Miss."

"You sure it´s me they want?"

"Positive."

I took the phone. The line was deaf.

"Krit told me to look for a blond girl sitting alone outside and I know my sister."

I gave the guy another look.

"Oh, my God..."

"Well, not exactly but I do consider myself almost an angel."

I jumped into his arms and he hold me tight.

"Zane..."

"It´s me, little sister."

I couldn´t stop crying. I rested my head against his.

"How´d you find me?"

"That was easy. Max´s miracle guy tracked you down. The hard part is just coming."

"Yeah?"

"Yeah."

He wiped the tears from my face, pulled my back to his chest and pointed to the night sky. There was this one star that was shining brighter than the others.

"See that?"

"Yeah."

"That´s Zack."

"I don´t believe in that stuff."

Zane ignored me.

"He´s looking down on us, still watching our every move and nagging as our conscience. He still loves us. That hasn´t changed. And right now he wants you to come with me and be with your family."

"No, he doesn´t. He´d be furious to see us all in the same room. Too much of a security risk."

"Okay, so he wouldn´t approve. But he did love you. And he never wanted anything but best for all of us. He didn´t really know how to show it but he did. He would want you to be happy."

"He would want me to be safe. That´s not the same as happy."

"Yeah it is."

We watched as the star twinkled.

"Syl, come home with me."

"I don´t have a home."

"We are your home."

"I can´t face them."

"Yes you can."

"I can´t. Not yet."

"I know it´s not easy without Zack. It´s not easy for any of us. But we´ll deal with it -together."

I closed my eyes and took a deep breath.

"Fine."

The bravest thing I ever said.

"Let´s go home."
