A Fish's View
By: Garrett Lemons
I am considered an odd fish. People have told me fish shouldn't act like dolphins and jump upon the waves during a storm nor stare at humans for fun. My life has been different from your normal fish, yet the oddest thing was to happen today. How I know this you ask, I don't, it is just a feeling.
So here I was, swimming along in the Mediterranean Sea getting ready to find some food when waves started crashing above me and thunder roared. My spirit's soared as I realized a storm had come. I swam to the surface and jumped high. Crashing back into the sea I laughed at how much fun this was. A school of krill swam beneath me and my instincts took over. All I heard before I chomp down was, "Now class, what is the appropriate way to use a metaphor?" before they were gone.
I enjoyed every bite until I was satisfied and I swam back to the surface to find barrels floating on the surface. Seeing genuine wine from Israel I realized a ship was going down. Looking for the ship I hear voices crying out to gods and goddesses and follow the sound. All of a sudden a thing flew behind me and splashed into the water.
"Jehosifat, swallow the thing that splashed," said a voice in my mind and I felt like I should obey, so obey I did.
I turned around and opened wide and felt the thing go down my throat. Satisfied, I swim down into the deep feeling weird vibrations on my stomach. They continued for many hours until I tuned my mind to listen.
"I cried by reason of mine affliction unto the Lord, and he heard me; out of the belly of hell cried I, and thou heardest my voice. For thou hadst cast me into the deep, in the midst of the seas; and the floods compassed me about: all thy billows and thy waves passed over me. Then I said, I am cast out of thy sight; yet I will look again toward thy holy temple. The waters compassed me about, even to the soul: the depth closed me round about, the weeds were wrapped about my head. I went down to the bottoms of the mountains; the earth with her bars was about me forever: yet hast thou brought up my life from corruption, O Lord my God. When my soul fainted within me I remembered the Lord: and my prayer came in unto thee, into thine holy temple. They that observe lying vanities forsake their own mercy. But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay that that I have vowed. Salvation is of the Lord," prayed the voice that I now realized belong to a man.
Thinking about what he had prayed, he felt insulted when his stomach was called the "belly of hell" then felt remorse for swallowing him.
"Spit him up on land," said the same heavenly voice.
Hearing this, I swam all the way to the shore of the sea and spit him out. After spitting him out I started swimming towards the Nile Delta.
Three months later while near the city of Thebes, I overheard some sailors talking about how some Prophet named Jonah saved the city of Nineveh from destruction by God. I felt proud for helping this man survive in the sea where he cried out to God.
That is my oddest moment of life. I still play in the waves and stare at humans. My life has gone on, but one thing has changed. I brag to everyone about helping the Prophet of God.
