DOWN THE WELL (Pippin)
I don't know how it happened
And all I can do is cry:
I didn't realise what would come at us
Or that Gandalf could possibly die
I didn't know what dangers hid
In the caverns of the mines
Or what could happen in the deep
That meant we'd leave him far behind
When I took that rock in my small hand
And let it drop down that well
I didn't foresee the deadly danger
That he fought until he fell
You thought I was a fool Gandalf
And I see now you were right
But it's too late now to say goodbye
You've fallen to eternal night
Oh Gandalf I have not nearly paid
The debt in tears I owe your life
And now though Aragorn leads us on
I fear we'll soon come to strife
Gandalf I am sorry
And now I cannot say
That I feel so responsible
For your tragic passing away
You're far beneath the shadow now
But you defeated the dark foe
At least that's what I hope you did
And hope's all we'll ever know
I think other hope is failing now
It began back when you fell
If I'd only though of such disaster
When I threw that rock far down that well
