CHAPTER FOUR: ANSWERS TO SOME OF THE QUESTIONS

As Major Carter led her toward the elevator Vicky studied her out of the corner of her eye.

"So, Major, how long have you worked with Jack?"

"Eight years, M'am."

"That's a long time. So I guess you're really close."

"The whole team is very close."

""Yes, but the others weren't so upset to find out I was Jack's wife. And, Jack was very concerned about your emotional state."

"I have a boyfriend, M'am," Carter said quickly, a little to quickly.

"Major, if I wasn't suspicious before I would be now."

Sam's blushed deeply and looked at the floor. The elevator came and they got on and Sam pressed the right button.

"Look, Carter, I don't mean to put you one the spot, but I know Jack enough to know his is in love with you. And I think you love him, too."

"M'am, even IF we did have ...feeling for one another the regs, well the Colonel wouldn't risk his career."

"You're wrong about that, he wouldn't give a rat's ass about his career, it YOUR career that he wouldn't risk. Besides we only got married because we were on an undercover op, not to mention technically I qualify as his LATE wife. After all I was killed in and explosion."

"Then how..."

"I woke up on a table with a little gray dude staring at me. Scared the crap out of me."

"Was that Loki?"

"No, Odin."

"Here's the infirmary, M'am. I'll send an airman to escort you back, unless you want me to stay."

"No thanks, I'll be fine. I need some time by myself. Please tell Uncle George I'll be there for debriefing after my medical."

"Sure thing, M'am."

BACK IN THE BRIEFING ROOM

"Well, General, I think that you have some explaining to do. Why the hell didn't you say anything?"

"Calm down Jack. I didn't want to say anything in case Dr. Jackson's theory was wrong."

"Danny?"

"Well, you see, Jack, I happened to see you and the General in the cemetery one Sunday and after you left I checked out the gravestones. Something caught my attention and reminded me of R5X-199."

"Huh?"

"That's the planet where we found the bodies of SG-19. I noticed that your wife's initials spelled VEMO."

"Son of a bitch, I thought there was something about them. I should have been the one to figure it out."

"Now, son, don't beat yourself up over this, you thought Vicky was dead. You wouldn't have had any reason to think of her."

"Still..."

"Still, nothing, Jack, just be glad you have your wife back from the dead."

Jack looked closely at his friend and saw the pain in Daniels face.

"I am, Danny, I'll never be able to thank you enough, with that he gave Daniel a hug.

"OK, people, I'm canceling your mission for tomorrow and we'll meet back here in two hours to debrief Vicky. I think all of SG-1 should be here since it will save a lot of time in having to go over the explanations several times."

Vicky was sitting on a bed in the infirmary waiting for the doctor to come back and release her when Jack walked in. He walked over and stood between her and wrapped her up in his arms. They just stayed like that for several minutes enjoying the feel of each other after all these years.

"God, that feels so good Jack. So, is there a wife or girlfriend who's going to be upset at my being here?"

"I have an ex-wife, but no there's no one."

"No one except a certain Major."

Jack blushed and looked at the floor, "we aren't..."

"I know the regs. But, you do care for her, and she for you."

"She has a boyfriend."

"Yeah, she told me. I wonder if he's just a substitute."

"Carter seems to be happy with him and I'm happy for her."

"Ever the hero, Jack. Sacrificing yourself or your heart for the greater good."

"What about you? No one in your life?"

"My lifestyle of running around the universe doing "jobs" for Odin hasn't exactly been conducive to anything long term. I won't lie to you, Jack, there were a few short term things, but on one that I cared enough about to make the effort."

"For cryin' out loud, Vicky. It's been twenty-three years, and you thought you were never coming back to Earth, I should hope you weren't alone for the whole time. Let's go get something to eat. We have an hour before we have to report back for your debriefing."
