Disclaimer: This may seem amazing, but I don't own Fruits Basket. Really,
I don't. *Cries Anime tears* WAAAH!! I'd really like to, but I'm not
clever enough to have thought of it first. So now all I can do is to write
about it and pretend the characters are mine for a while!! Harhar! Yuki
and Haru are at my mercy for the time being at least! *looks back on what
she's just written* Oh, god. Sorry!! Please ignore my insane and really
long disclaimer and get on with reading the fic... if you still want to... I
hope I haven't scared you off... @_@
Note: This is a Haru/Yuki fanfic. If you don't like this couple then for god's sake don't bother reading it. There may be yaoi, not sure yet, sorry can't be more definite, but if you like the couple then give it a go! It's worth it (I hope...!) ^_^
White Love
SNAP.
Yuki's eyes sprang open as he woke from the latest of the strange dreams that had been recently haunting his nights.
All these dreams were along the same lines. In this last one, Haru had been ballet dancing across a stage. He was dressed in only a top hat and tails – just the jacket. No shirt, and no trousers, but he was wearing boxers (cue disappointed sighs from his most perverted fangirls!). The boxers were worth noting; grey, they had whiskers on either leg, leaving little doubt as to where the attached nose would be. (...)
Tragic music rose and fell as the strangely-attired ox leapt expansively around the stage, chasing a small grey object dangling on a string just out of his reach.
Yuki remembered wondering what would happen if Haru were to catch the object of his chase. As if to demonstrate this, the string descended to almost within his grasp. Haru's face lit up, and he made one last desperate grab for it. As he did, Yuki had uncannily felt his own heart leap in...Excitement? Joy? Hope? Whatever it was, he dismissed it as his understanding of how important Haru seemed to think the small grey object. Despite his exertions, however, the dedicated ox missed the string by a whisker (excuse the pun!).
Darkness fell.
A spotlight picked out an exhausted White Haru, still clad only in his top hat, jacket and boxers. He sat in silence, head bowed, shoulders heaving as he caught his breath. After a few minutes, he began to softly, almost inaudibly, croon the words to a love song.
"I'm here without you baby
But you're still on my lonely mind I think about you baby And I dream about you all the time. I'm here without you baby But you're still with me in my dreams And tonight boy (author's license) It's only you and me." – ("Here Without You," 3 Doors Down)
With that last word, his voice broke, and he began to cry softly, unable to maintain his cool façade any longer, as the spotlight dimmed until all was again darkness.
... ...
Now, in Yuki's opinion, this was a very, um, strange, almost disturbing dream. He was tempted to ignore it, but together with the others, well, he was finding it hard to disregard them all. Yuki lay still for a moment, pained by indecision. He hated mornings with a passion, and being woken up so quickly and fully was a very unusual occurrence for him. Yet he was reluctant to let himself drift back to sleep; he'd had enough of those disturbing images for the time being. With this in mind, Yuki dragged himself and slowly readied himself for school.
~***~
It had not been a good day. Arriving at school earlier than usual due to his abrupt awakening, Yuki had found himself being forced to resolve an argument between two of the fanclub girls over whose hair looked nicer. When he had tried to be diplomatic, and suggested that he couldn't really tell the difference, (they were identical hairdo's, save for the colour) but that they both looked nice, he was met with waterworks, as each girl hysterically tried to make him see the subtle differences in texture, length, and hold. *Sigh.* Apologising, Yuki moved away, knowing there was nothing else he could do.
Then, at lunch, he made an innocuous comment to Kyou about maybe brushing his hair once in a while – "I'm just saying that I don't like having to defend you when people come to me about your lack of grooming." Of course, that stupid cat took it the wrong way as usual, demanding to know who cared about his hair so he could go and convince them not to. When Yuki refused to tell him, Kyou transferred his anger to Yuki, who was forced to knock him *gently* over to avoid a major scene. The teacher who saw only gave Yuki a warning, not detention, which gave that annoying cat the opportunity to whine for the remainder of lunch about how the teachers favoured Yuki. Personally, Yuki thought he would have preferred detention.
To top everything off, he came to Geography only to find that he hadn't finished his homework. He had tried to, last night, but he was finding it hard to concentrate lately, although he didn't know why. Thankfully, as he was such a good student normally, his teacher gave him a one-night extension – cue more grumbling from the extremely aggravated Kyou about favouritism.
Hopefully, thought Yuki as the trio walked home from school, tomorrow would be better. At least he hadn't seen Haru today. That could have been awkward, given Yuki's dreams of late...
~***~
After dinner, however, Shigure called Yuki into his study for "a chat." He was far more subdued that usual, and the fact that he made a point of getting Yuki alone was worrying. Kyou picked up on this, and to distract Tohru – he wouldn't want her to worry herself (isn't he sweet!! ^_^) – he offered to help her with the washing up. She agreed chirpily (fricking riceball -_-'), happy for the chance to spend some time with the temperamental feline. Knowing this could only be bad news, Yuki followed Shigure reluctantly.
"What?" he demanded, before Shigure could say a word. Looking at the nervous expression on his elder's face, he knew, somehow. "It's Akito, isn't it? He wants his toy back." Shigure's eyes were downcast, his silence confirmation enough.
Yuki sank to the floor, in shock. He had known, always known that this day would come. Akito. He began to shake uncontrollably, as all the memories came flooding back. He felt arms around him, and tried to shrug them off, but Shigure would not be deterred (NO dirty comments there, thanks!).
"I know," he said, "and if I could do anything, I would. I tried talking to him, but he wouldn't hear me. He seems determined to see you again. I don't know what to say, but you know you can't refuse him again. After New Years, he became more and more agitated, and it might be better to just... just get it over with."
Yuki nodded dully. He knew there was no escape, and already his body was remembering his old methods of coping, shutting off his emotions. "I'm going to bed then. See you in the morning."
"Ah...Yuki? Are you ok..?" Shigure's voice trailed off as Yuki wandered out of the room, heading apparently emotionlessly up the stairs. Shigure hung his head, feeling helpless. But what could he do? What Akito wanted, Akito got – sooner or later. Now he wanted Yuki, and there was nothing he or any of the Sohma's could do about it.
~***~
Yuki didn't get up the next morning. Tohru was worried, naturally, but Shigure told her that the best thing she could do for Yuki at the moment was to go to school. He wouldn't want her schoolwork to suffer because of him. Tohru agreed, reluctantly, but made Shigure promise to call her at school if Yuki got any worse, assuming he was merely ill.
Kyou caught the mood of the other Sohma's, however, and would not be gotten rid of so easily. "What?" he said. "What is it?" When Shigure didn't reply, he, too, knew. "Oh, no. It's him, isn't it? Will he," he gestured upstairs "be ok?"
"No," Shigure replied "but there's nothing we can do for him now."
Kyou left for school in a significantly worse mood than usual.
~***~
Haru was worried. Yuki hadn't been at school that day. Tohru thought he was sick, but Kyou was acting strangely more moody than usual. When Haru asked, Kyou just looked at him, but would not explain. Haru knew it was serious, and he didn't like feeling helpless when it came to Yuki.
The atmosphere at the main house was different, too – tense. Feeling the oppressive air, Haru went off in search of Hatori. Someone had better tell him what was going on. The doctor of the Sohma family was sitting at his desk, looking more depressed than usual.
"What is it? I know it has something to do with Yuki. Is he ok? What's going on? TELL ME WHAT'S HAPPENING!!" He howled these last words, frustrated by the dragon's calm stance.
"Yes," he replied, "its Yuki. Akito..." he, too trailed off. Haru needed no more than that though.
"Oh no..." He ran through the compound, not stopping until he reached the entrance to Akito's wing of the main house. There he stopped, panting, hands on his knees. He couldn't go in, he knew, but he could and would wait outside until Yuki was released. He sat rigidly, his eyes trained on the door. He would wait for as long as it took. He would always wait, for Yuki. (Awww, the fluff!!)
~***~
It was a full hour before Yuki emerged. He looked at Haru waiting there, and turned away. "Can I stay here somewhere? He.." his voice caught, but he managed to keep a tight rein on his emotions "He wants to see me again tomorrow."
Haru looked at him, hating himself for being so weak, for not being able to do anything, but he just nodded. "You can stay at Hatori's. He'll probably need to look at you, anyway." He realised that now was probably not the time to have Yuki stay with him.
"No," said the carefully emotionless rat "I'm fine. But I'll stay at Hatori's, I guess. It doesn't really matter. Can we just go... Please?"
Haru took his arm and gently steered him away from the door to that place. There was nothing he could do for Yuki at the moment, except wait. Yuki had never been one to share his emotions – he said he didn't want to burden those who already had so much pain in their lives. As much as Haru assured him that he would never see listening to his feelings as a burden, Yuki just smiled a little wistfully, thanked him and stayed closed, his eyes shuttered windows.
Haru left him with Hatori. "Take good care of him... please. Please." Hatori nodded. "I'll do all I can. You know that, Haru. Now go – rest. Exhausting yourself will not do anyone any good." Nodding woodenly, Haru left. He knew that he wouldn't sleep that night.
So, what do you think? Hope it was ok... be gentle! Next chapter up soon! ^_^ SpringSnow
