CHAPTER THIRTY-FOUR: FRYING BACON
The planning on the Iraqi Invasion was not as well organized as the capture of Sam's now es-boyfriend, though he didn't know yet about the ex part. Wednesday Sam called him and told him that she would have a three-day weekend. Since Pete had not met Ferretti SG-3 went to Denver to handle surveillance and would plant the equipment in his house and car.
They found out that Pete would work long days Wednesday and Thursday to clear him for the trip to Colorado Springs. While he was out they planted Asguard technology equipment in his house. They got lucky with his car and found that he had dropped it off to be serviced Wednesday afternoon and was using his unmarked police car. They went to the dealer and showing Homeland Security ID they got access to his car.
They knew while the NID also had some access to Asguard technology they couldn't detect it so their equipment would not be found. With the tap on his phone they found out that he was meeting with the NID on Friday morning to get the listening equipment and to hand over the file that Pete had already typed up on everything that he remembered on the SGC, it's layout and personnel.
After taking the pictures and recording with a parabolic microphone they called to report.
"O'Neill."
"Jack, Ferretti here. We got everything we need."
"Good job. Now get your Asses back here so that we can print up everything and I want you to beat that bastard back."
"No problem, when the meet was going down I had one of my guys let the air out of one of his tires. That should delay him for at least a half an hour."
"Glad you're on our side, Ferretti. Hurry back, I don't want to have Carter with him any longer than I have to."

Alex got up from the couch to get the box of tissues and handed it to Sam. She wiped her eyes and blew her nose then looked at him with red-rimed eyes.
"I'm sorry, Sir, it's just..."
He took her hands in his, "Now, Sam, call me Alex. You can't think of me as a superior officer in here, otherwise you wouldn't be comfortable telling me your deepest secrets." She smiles at him, "that's better. You have every right of be upset. You were betrayed by someone you cared about."
"What's wrong with me, I am such a looser."
"You are not a looser. You are a beautiful, intelligent woman."
"Do you really think so?"
He studied her for a moment. //do I think so? I know so, God, you're beautiful. What the hell is wrong with that moron. If I had a woman like that I would cherish her...Whoa, I so do not to be going there\\ "Of course I think so, any man would. He's a fool."
"Thanks, Alex, you have made me feel a lot better."
"That IS my job, you know?" He smiled at her.
She gave him one of her brilliant smiles, "And you're very good at it." As she was getting up she leaned over and kissed him on the cheek.
It made his heart race. //crap, I in trouble\\ He went to the phone to call his therapist to have her talk some sense into him.

Vicky and Lisa were about halfway done with setting up the surveillance in Major Carter's house when Vicky's phone rang.
"O'Neill."
"Vicky, Pete is just getting ready to leave Denver. Carter told him that she had a report to finish and to let himself in."
"Great, that will give him opportunity to plant his bugs and we'll be done in plenty of time."
"Are you sure? I don't you to be anywhere neat there when that asshole gets there."
"I'm sure, Jack, besides if all else fails and he gets here to quick, I can always beam us up to Zippy and then to the base."
"OK, but promise that you'll be careful."
"Yes, Mom." When she hung up she saw Lisa smiling at her, "What?"
"It's so cute the way the Colonel worries about you."
"Well, don't tell him that he's cute, it would embarrass the hell out of him."
~X~X~X~X~X~X~X~X~X~X~X~
Vicky and Chang got back to the base before Pete had gotten to Colorado Springs. Vicky went to set up the viewing equipment in the conference room, since they weren't picking up Pete before tomorrow they had him on a loose leash, and Chang went to the ladies room. She spotted Major Carter washing her face and saw that she had obviously been crying.
?Are you OK, Ma'am?"
Sam turned around startled, "Oh, Sergeant, I didn't see you there."
"That's OK, Ma'am, I'm easy to overlook."
She got a big smile for her effort, "I'm fine."
"Permission to speak freely, Ma'am."
"Permission granted."
"Ma'am, you are no more responsible here that I was when that sicko attacked me."
"I should have seen..."
"How, Ma'am? He was nice, he is a cop for God's sake, and you cared about him. There is not a woman on this planet, or probably any other planet either, that has never misjudged a man."
"You know, you're right. Now, let's go get that son of a bitch," and she leaned over and gave Lisa a hug.
"That's the spirit, Ma'am!"
~X~X~X~X~X~X~X~X~X~X~X~
When they got to the conference room General Hammond, Vicky, Teal'c and Ferretti were already there and Colonel O'Neill came in right after them followed by two airmen who were pushing a cart with big bowls of popcorn and soft drinks and coffee on it.
"Put the stuff on the table guys, and Thanks."
Hammond looked at O'Neill and raised his eyebrows.
"What? We have to have popcorn for a show, don't we?"
Sam giggled and said, "Yes, Sir!" Jack turned and beamed at her, he wasn't even going to scold her for giggling, he was so glad to see her in a better mood.
They had sat down and Jack was playing waiter, taking orders and passing out the refreshments when Daniel rushed in. "Sorry, I'm late."
"Oh, gee, Daniel there's a first time for everything," Jack said sarcastically.
Daniel glared to him as he set down, but perked up when Jack delivered Coffee. Jack had just finished when Pete let himself into Sam's house. "Do I have good timing or what?"
"Or What!" The rest of the room chorused. Jack pretended to look hurt.
They watched as Pete checked out the house, making sure he was alone. He then went back outside and came in with the envelope that held the listening devices. He went around the house including the bedroom and bathroom. He also put one in every phone in the house.
Carter was heard to be mumbling things like, "bastard, asshole, son of a bitch," and then started to get creative, "scum sucking troll, toad eating mutant."
As he was finishing when Vicky said, "Sam why don't you give him a few minutes, then call him and tell him to meet you at the restaurant. That way you won't have to be alone with."
"Captain, that's a great idea," Hammond looked to Carter, "I agree, I don't you to have to be alone with him."
Sam looked grateful for the idea, she really didn't want to be alone with him, either." She waited about five minutes and called him on his cell phone. "Hey, Pete, are you in Colorado Springs yet?"
"Yes, I'm at your house."
"Great, I've just finished. I tell you what I'm starving why don't you meet me at our favorite restaurant?"
"That's a good idea, babe, I'll see you in about a half an hour."
~X~X~X~X~X~X~X~X~X~X~X~
Sam made sure she was fifteen minutes late that way he would already be inside, "Hi, sorry, the Colonel stopped me on the way out." She gave him a quick kiss and sat down and grabbed the menu. "Have you decided what you want? I'm in the mood for chicken."
"They have the Chicken Kiev on special. I think that I'll have it, too." He motioned to the waitress so that they could order. "And could you bring the salads right out? We have a hungry woman here." The waitress smiled at them and went to get their drinks and salads.
"So, Pete, how was your week?"
Pete began to tell her about her week. Apparently he had a bad one and had almost been shot apprenticing a suspect. //to bad he wasn't shot. No, on second thought I'm glad he wasn't, that way I can shoot him\\ by that time they had finished their salads and started on the main course.
"So, Sam, how was your week?"
She began to tell him about a supposedly routine week of paperwork and research. When she was almost finished her phone rang.
"For God's sake, Sam, can't you just ignore it"
"Pete, you know I can't, what if it had been yours, you would answer it. Carter."
"O'Neill."
"Sir, what's the problem."
"The problem is that we can't shoot him right now."
Sam had to fight a smile, "Well, Sir, I certainly agree with you on that."
"OK, Carter, time to pull you out of there. Make your excuses and leave. Come back to the base, just in case that he follows you."
"Yes, Sir, I'll be right there." She turned to Pete, who looked thoroughly discussed, "Pete, I'm sorry, I have to go."
"Of course you do."
"Please, let's not fight about this now. This is a problem with the...telemetry, it's going to take a while. Why don't you go back to Denver and I'll call you tomorrow if I'm done."
"Yeah, and I'll make sure and hold my breath,"
Sam threw money on the table and hurried out. //or, I could just strangle you and do the world a favor.
~X~X~X~X~X~X~X~X~X~X~X~
Sam decided to stay on base, it was just to creepy having all of those surveillance devices in her house. Besides it would make it look more legitimate to anyone listening if she didn't come home. They knew that there were tracking devices on her car so they would know that she was really at the base.
They listened as Pete called his contact. "Yeah, I planted everything, not that you'll near much tonight because she went back to the base. Now I'm glad that I agreed to do this. She needs to get the hell out of that mountain so that she can spend more time with me."
Chang looked like she had eaten something that didn't agree with her, "snake."
Jack put his arm around her shoulder, "of the worse kind, kid."
Vicky told Jack that she wanted to do something before they went home and she went to Alex's office.
~X~X~X~X~X~X~X~X~X~X~X~
"Ales, could you spend sometime with Sam? I know that Daniel and Teal's will but they will be friends and if you could hang out with them and keep a professional eye on her, I could appreciate it."
"I'd be glad to." //of course I won't tell her how glad. I have got to stop this, not only is she my patient but she is coming off of a bad relationship\\
~X~X~X~X~X~X~X~X~X~X~X~
Alex rapped on the conference room door, "I hear that some of you are staying on base. Do you mind if I join you for dinner? I am so tired of eating alone. For some reason some people seem to be afraid of me."
Sam smiled, grateful for more company, "You're more than welcome."
Jack slapped him on the back, "They must have heard that you can make people's heads smaller." When Alex looked at him confused he continued, "When we were told that you were coming to the base, I mentioned that you were a head-shrinker and Teal'c, being an alien thought that you would make your heads smaller."
"God knows, Jack, you don't need yours any smaller." He turned around with a scowl to see that Vicky had returned . "Are you ready?" He put his arm around her and they bid the others good –bye and went home.
~X~X~X~X~X~X~X~X~X~X~X~
Early the next morning Sam called Pete and told him that she was finished.
"Why should I come up? They'll just find another emergency."
"The General promised that, short of an invasion of Earth, I would not be bothered. Come on, Pete, I miss you."
"OK, I'll be there as fast as I can."
~X~X~X~X~X~X~X~X~X~X~X~
When Pete got to Sam's and let himself in he was surprised to find the living room full of SGC personnel. "Honey, I thought you said that you wouldn't be bothered."
"Sit down," Jack said. He felt a large hand on his shoulder pressing him into a chair. He looked up to see Murray.
"Hey, what's going on?"
"You son of a bitch!" Sam came up and punched him in the jaw.
"What's going on? Are you going to let her get away with that?"
Jack turned to Sam, "Bad, Major, you should hit him when he's standing. That way you will have more force behind the blow."
"Yes, Sir, sorry, Sir, next time I'll do better," Sam smiled at him."
See that you do." He turned to Pete and said, "And what this is about is treason."
Pete gaped, "What the HELL are you talking about?"
The Colonel gestured to Chang who played back the hologram of Pete planting the listening devices. Then he took out a file and showed the pictured of the file and envelope exchange. "Looks to me like you're selling national secrets. Spying on an Air Force Officer who is stationed at a highly sensitive military base."
"That isn't money and you know it. Besides when I tell the press what you do at that base..."
It was Vicky's turn to speak, "What press? I have been doing research, with the help of SGT Chang on this nifty law called "The Patriot Act". Now I'm not a lawyer and to me much of it seems unconstitutional, but for our purposes, it's perfect. See, we can now hold you FOREVER, with no lawyer, no phone call, and certainly no press. How cool is that?"
Pete turned pale. Teal'c pulled him up so that Jack could put handcuffs on him, which he did VERY tightly. "Damn it, that hurts!"
"To bad."
"Honey step away from him a minute," Vicky said to Jack. When he did she Zatted him.
"Honey, why'd you do that?"
"He'll attract less attention unconscious. Besides, he whining was giving me a headache."
"Sounds good to me."
Teal'c slung Pete over his shoulder and Vicky, Chang, and Sam went around and removed all of the extra "electronics" from Sam's house.
