Title: A New Neighbor
Rating: R
Pairing(s): eventual HP/DM, HP/OC (mentor-student or father-son type relationship)
Warning(s): spoilers for OOTP!!, slash, some violence and child abuse, language, angst
Summary: Harry returns to the Dursley's the summer following his fifth year in a state of depression. Hermione and Ron had gotten together during the school year, leaving him the third wheel, and Sirius had been killed in the Department of Mysteries. Dumbledore had refused to let him stay somewhere else, and the Dursley's were being their normal, abusive selves.
Suddenly, about a week after Harry returns, a man moves in to the house beside the Dursley's. He turns out to be a wizard, and notices the Dursley's treatment of Harry and steps in. He tutors Harry in all of his subjects and Harry learns more about the three opposing sides in the war, something he figured that Dumbledore would never fully explain to him.
Harry returns for his sixth year and Dumbledore tightens his hold on 'his Golden Boy'. Harry retaliates by contacting his new neighbor and delves into the study of Dark Arts. What will become of him, and in the end, whose side will he choose?
* Prologue *
"Get in the car boy before someone sees you." Harry shoved his stuff into the trunk of the car and slid into the back seat. Vernon Dursley plopped into the drivers side of the car, making it shift and lean to the left. (AN: Or is it the right side? Don't they drive on the opposite side of the road there?)
"Can we stop and get some ice cream Daddy?" Dudley whined from the front seat. Vernon heartily agreed, denying Harry the right to have any while he did so, then took off to the ice cream shop. Dudley and Vernon retreated from the store with large come of chocolate and vanilla ice cream. They took great enjoyment in seeing Harry gaze longingly at the treats.
"You boy will be moving back into your cupboard." Vernon announced as they pulled into the driveway. Harry sighed, he had gotten claustrophobia from that damnable cupboard and now he was going back in! Life certainly wasn't fair.
Harry unloaded his stuff and trudged behind his relatives. Out of the corner of his eye he saw a 'For Sale' sign in the houses yard next door. There was a 'Sold' sign over that. Looks like they would be getting new neighbors. Wonderful. "Boy!" Harry winced and went inside.
"To the cupboard!" Petunia Dursley pointed to the cupboard, which was hanging open. Harry sighed and threw his stuff inside. He was shoved in after that and the door was locked. The grates slid closed with a small clanging sound and Harry was left in darkness.
He fiddled with the small light bulb and found it to be burnt out. With another long sigh, he collapsed on his bed/cot and covered his eyes with his arm. He heard the Dursley's moving in and out of the kitchen, up and down the stairs, and of course, outside then back inside. He longed to be out there.
Feeling the beginning of an attack forming, Harry thought of other things. He thought of Quidditch, but that made him even worse, then he thought of Ron and Hermione. He felt good for them, happy that they finally got the guts to ask the other out. Harry thought about Remus Lupn, his old Defense teacher and his fathers friend, but thinking of the werewolf made Harry remember his godfather.
He had only know Sirius for a few years. He was wrongfully accused of selling out Harry's parents to Voldemort, and had been in Azkaban for the first twelve or so years of Harry's life. He escaped during Harry's third year and Harry had learned the truth about him.
Unfortunately, they weren't able to hang onto the real traitor, who had taken up life as Ron's pet rat Scabbers. Sirius was forced to live on the run, writing Harry and visiting when he could.
The previous year Harry had been lured to the Ministries Department of Mysteries under the pretense that Sirius would be killed if he didn't help him. It had been a trap. Harry and his friends had to battle off deatheaters and Voldemort himself. During the battle, Sirius had been cursed and pushed into the Veil.
Harry began to cry softly. The look on his godfathers face when he fell into the veil was one of terror, and one of sadness. The person responsible for his death, Bellatrix Lestrange, stood there laughing until Harry cursed her. Albus Dumbledore had to save Harry as he got into a battle with Voldemort, and the ministry was finally forced to admit the dark Lords uprising.
Harry was jolted out of his thoughts by a loud banging noise. "Boy! Get up now! It's time to fix us dinner!" Harry sighed. This was going to be a long summer..
