Leave the Light On

Taichi's POV

Ever since I was little, my mom would leave the light on for me. When I had a nightmare, she would flip on the light and all the bad things would go away. The light would fill the room and make it glow. Monsters can't stand the light.

When I got older and went to my first sleepover, she told me she would leave the light on. "Just in case," she said. I only went across the street, but sure enough I got scared and wanted to go home. But when I looked across the street, I saw the light on in our apartment. I didn't feel scared anymore.

When I was ten, my mom said I had to be home when the streetlights came on. Our apartment was always glowing too when I got home, and I knew my mom was inside waiting for me.

When I was seventeen, I broke curfew. I knew my mom would be really mad. On my way home, I saw a light on in our apartment. Mom was asleep on the couch. In my room, the light on the table was on and the covers were pulled back all ready for me.

Now I'm getting ready to go off to collage. The guys are waiting in the car, honking the horn. My mom is crying. As I hugged her goodbye, I almost started crying myself. My voice cracked as I asked, "leave the light on for me?"

She smiled at me and said, "Of course baby, of course."
