My Beloved Marine

Disclaimer: No tangible goods or services, other than the warm fuzzy feelings I get from writing this and getting reviews, are being received from this fanfiction. I claim no ownership save the plot.
Author's Note: Here's another songfic. I hate reading them. I see the label "songfic" and 85% of the time, I don't read them. But I write them. I'm an English major; I know the meaning of irony. This is. Also, I'm not a man, but I write in Harm's persona sometimes. It's strange, but it works…doesn't it? Shipperish.
Song: "My Beloved Monster and Me" by the Eels. I don't own it, either.
1930 Eastern
Mattie and Jen's Apartment
North of Union Station
Dinner had been finished and cleaned up, so Mattie, Mac, and Jen were sitting on the couch engrossed in the movie Shrek. Harm sat on the easy chair, trying to get into the movie, but it just wasn't happening for him. He'd never been much of a fan of fairytales. So far, the best thing about the movie was the music. As he watched Shrek and Princess Fiona walking through a field, he heard the opening to an unfamiliar song. The words were just strange.
My beloved monster and
me
We go everywhere together
Wearing a raincoat that has four sleeves
Gets us through all kinds of weather.
'My beloved monster?' Harm thought. 'What kind of song is this?' The chorus, however, caught him off guard.
She will always be the
only thing
That comes between me and the awful sting
That comes from living in a world that's so damn mean
Harm looked over at the girls, his gaze coming to rest on Mac. Sitting there, he realized how true the chorus was. She was often the only thing that stood between him and the world. Her quiet support when all others thought he was wrong meant more to him than almost anything. Hell, she thought he was wrong half the time, but she still fought for him. His thoughts went back to the fallout of the time he had spent in the brig. She hadn't been there while he was in the brig, true, but intellectually he knew that she hadn't been allowed. As soon as he was out, though, she was there. When he had gone to court to fight for custody of Mattie, she was there, even after the awful things he had said to her in his apartment. She had also spoken to Mr. Johnson to get him to give up custody, albeit temporarily while he dried himself out. Mac was the sole reason for his current happiness at having Mattie in his life. Mac had been there to help him deal with the revelation that he had a brother, and that his father was human, not the demi-god Harm had turned him into as a child. More than that, Mac had been there when he found out that his father was dead. She had been there for him a million times, even when it was a little thing like losing a court case or having a bad day.
My beloved monster is
tough
If she wants she will disrobe you
But if you lay her down for a kiss
Her little heart it could explode
'Is that true?' Harm thought. Based on Mac's resemblance to the monster throughout the beginning of the song, the logical assumption was that "if you lay her down for a kiss, her little heart it could explode." Maybe that was true, even after what she said in Paraguay. Maybe talking wasn't what should happen, at least at first. Maybe if he kissed her, it would help. Maybe. She could also tear him limb from limb; she was a Marine, after all.
She will always be the
only thing
That comes between me and the awful sting
That comes from living in a world that's so damn... mean
Harm listened as the final chorus played out. She had always stood between him and the world—what he needed now was her. Pondering what her reaction would be if, after the movie, he grabbed her and kissed her senseless, he turned back to Shrek to see what else he could learn from this masterpiece.
