I don't own Fingon or Maedhros, and even the scenario is based on a picture

far more valiant than leaping over a cliff himself.

"You're going to jump down there?" Maedhros looked apprehensively over the edge of the cliff,
"Yes," Fingon came to stand beside his cousin, "Of course, if you don't think you can do it..." the words touched a nerve, just as he had intended. Maedhros stood up and got ready for the jump,
"Of course I can. Anything you can do, I can do!" Fingon grinned,
"Well, I intend to get a handful of sand off the bottom, can you do that?"
"Yes!" Meadhros' face was set.
"Right!" and they jumped. Fingon laughed as he went down, he loved cliff- diving, loved the feel of the wind in his hair and the sudden chill of the sea. He plunged in and swam strongly down to the bottom, where he grabbed his handful of sand and kicked his way up to the surface once more, "Got it!" he thrust the dripping handful above the surface and scrambled up the side of a rock.
Where was Maedhros?
Fingon looked up, planning the teasing he would subject the other elf to if Maedhros hadn't jumped, but he wasn't there.
"Maedhros?" Fingon put his sand down on the top of the rock on which he sat and slid back into the water. He knew the dangers of cliff-diving, having been told them numerous times by his father. Maedhros could have landed on a rock, or been taken by a current, or any number of horrible fates.
Fingon took a deep breath and dived under the surface. He opened his eyes under the water and looked about for his cousin's distinctive red hair.
Ah! There he was.
Fingon dived down towards Maedhros, who was lying on the bottom of the bay, grabbed him, and swam up towards the light.
He surfaced, coughing and spluttering, and almost immediately sank again. After this had happened a few more times he grabbed the rock on which he had perched only moments before and dragged himself and Maedhros onto it. He laid Maedhros on his side and tilted his head back, trying to see if he was breathing.
He didn't know what he would do if Maedhros was dead, it would be his fault for goading him into jumping and swimming to the bottom, he would have killed his cousin and best friend as surely as if he had held him under the water himself
To his relief Maedhros coughed a couple of times and was sick, spitting out the seawater he had swallowed. Then he opened his eyes and grinned at Fingon, before holding out his clenched right fist and opening it.
He held a handful of sand.
