Impulse

Jack sat at his desk, hating himself for what he was about to do. Why'd he have to act on impulse anyway? He always did that, and it got him into more trouble then good. He knew she'd cry. He could see her looking up at him with big, wet eyes.

Jack sighed. He had to do this. He knew she was on base. Janet was with her in the lab.

Jack looked at his watch. Ten minutes till noon. It could wait until after lunch, couldn't it?

He looked at the metal object on his floor. It was carrying something horrible, something so vile Jack could barely stand to be near it.

No, this couldn't wait.

He picked up his phone and dialed Janet's lab. She answered cheerfully. Of course she was cheerful, she wasn't in the same room as the, thing. He told Janet that he needed to see her in his office. Of course Cassie would come, because when she was on base, she was everywhere her mother was.

Jack waited impatiently for the two to arrive. He looked over at the metal object, glaring. Janet would be wary, of course, she had every right to be.

There was light tap on his door and he told them to enter. Oh great, they'd brought Sam along with them. Now she would know what he was hiding in his office.

Jack pointed to the metal object and tried to hide his smile as Cassie gleamed with excitement. "Can I Mom?"

Janet gave Jack a contemptuous look before nodding to Cassie. Yep, she was wary.

Cassie squealed, then went to the metal cage and picked up the tiny object that was in it. "Thank you Jack."

"Really, Sir, did you have to keep it in a cage?" Sam asked, amused.

Jack looked over at the bundle of fur in Cassie's arms. "It was either that or Teal'c's room." The Jaffa hated the beings as much as Jack did.

It was really a spur of the moment thing. He was walking outside his house and a neighbor had a whole litter of them, giving them away. Jack was reminded of Cassie, and so he took one.

"I'm gonna name him Neil." Cassie beamed.

"Uh, honey, I think it's a female." Janet said, turning the thing upside down.

"I don't care." Cassie said, taking the creature back from her mother. "Want to hold her Jack?"

Jack shook his head. "No, thanks. I'm a dog man."
