In The Dark of Night

The rain gently peppered the top of his head, causing a small torrent of cold water to add to the salty moisture already running down his face. Hogan carefully picked his route, dodging rocks and fallen tree limbs. It was so dark…and quiet. As if the night knew what they were about. He was grateful for the rain, even though it was cold, it would mask the sounds of their march. These long silent marches, that he so hated. How many had there been now…too many to count. How many more would there be before this war was over.

He glanced back at the silent Jon, and the members of his team following behind. Jon Pierre led a small Underground unit. They were a force to be reckoned with, and their assistance had been a God send on more than one occasion. A quick friendship had formed between this Underground group and his own faction of allied soldiers. while performing their acts of sabotage. Kinch, Carter, Newkirk and LeBeau had taken to Jon right away and Jon to them.

They finally reached the spot they had been searching for and the silent assembly made their preparations. Each man knew his task; it wouldn't take long to finish the job. The American Colonel stepped away from the small solemn assemblage and stood guard while they worked. ~ "One day this will be our last trip…" you said, "…and we will finally be able to rest." I admit, it is not, all together, an unpleasant thought.  I'm tired too, Jon.  ~ Hogan thought, as he stooped down and grabbed a fistful of dirt. The dirt fell from his hand and made a dull sound as it hit its target. He couldn't help wondering if the next trip would find him the passenger instead of a member of the procession. "Rest in peace, friend."
