He's slipping away from her.
She can feel it.
Bit by bit, little by little, touch by touch, he's slipping away. It's gradual, barely noticeable, but she notices. She knows. He'll be gone soon.
He tries to hide it, tries to pretend like things are normal, are okay, but she knows better. They met on the worst day of her life, when her world was falling down around her, and she got to see into the core of him. She saw Jack Bauer in all his fearsome determination and his surprising gentleness. She knows instinctively she would not have survived it were it not for him. She knows that the bond they formed that night will always link him to her but she knows he will not be *with* her much longer.
Even as he lies beside her at night, his arm wrapped lightly about her midsection, his breath on the back of her neck, there is a distance. A distance she can't cross.
He's slipping away from her and she can't stop it.
He could be happy with her, they could be happy together, she loves him and she knows he loves her . . .
She thinks that might be why.
He loves her . . .
And she's not Teri.
And he can never forgive himself for that.
He's slipping away and Kate doesn't know how to stop it. All she can do is wait for the inevitable . . .
And pray it doesn't happen.
