Disclaimer: FF8 doesn't belong to me and if you want to use any of my
characters please ask first.
I'd like to thank all the people that reviewed. I'm happy that you don't know where this is going Noacat because if you did, I would be forced to change the whole story. I really want to shock you all when the disastrous event is going to happen because believe me Rinoa getting bitten by a T-Rexaur is far from being the most violent scene that I will write about! Angelheart it's a pleasure to see that you had fun reviewing, but really I wouldn't jump Seifer (I've got something better planned in the event that I actually meet him *tee hee*) Nooooooooooooooo!!!!! Zero Doom found mistakes! I'm really trying to spell correctly, I am! Gaias Legacy you find Rinoa being able to move around and not be seen surprising. Lol, don't worry I'll be explaining why she wasn't seen in this chapter, and you find Maura hot (like Irvine did) well most guys who would read a description like it would, but it was nice of you to point it out. Mimi- moogle-chan I'm happy you had no problem imagining the people because I was a bit worried that my descriptions were unclear, but since no one complained...
On another note I have finally decided what the new name of this story will be. Instead of "The Curse of the Golden Voice" it will be "The Song of the Phoenix", so if you want to read chapter 8 (which will eventually come out) don't forget to look for it under its new title in its place.
Chapter 7: To Fetch a Sorceress in Distress
It was a Friday afternoon at Balamb Garden and classes had just ended signaling the beginning of the week-end, and party time for many. Much to Brice, Maura, and Aurilia's dismay, now the halls were crowded with students who, unlike them, were in no hurry to get anywhere and wouldn't move out of the way for someone who was. Most of them would just ignore the three friends when they would politely ask if they would move out of the way because they were too busy sharing the latest gossip: Rinoa was in the Infirmary once again.
The golden haired women signed, shaking her head, she remembered well how it was in this school, Balamb being a small continent where nothing exciting ever happened, when something did the news would spread like wild fire. Soon they would also know who had saved the dying sorceress and she would bring unwanted attention from men and women alike. Once again the guys would proceed to asking her and Maura out or form fan clubs, which would be named the Kramies after herself and the Avalon's after her friend, while the girls would become jealous and start untrue rumors. She chuckled as she watched her energetic male comrade push his way past a big group of people, clearing a path for them to get to her dorm, so they could speak in private.
Once inside the room, behind a safely locked door, they started their conversation.
"We all noticed that she wasn't just recuperating in there, so what do we do? We aren't going to be allowed back in there till she wakes up, but she is going to need our help to do that." Brice yelled. He had always been quick to draw conclusions and never thought about what he said until it was out of his mouth.
"I don't even know why we have to help her more then we have already? After all, we don't need her help for what's about to happen next and saving her would only result in burdening us further." Maura said in her usual negative tone, arms crossed, eyes closed, leaning against the wall.
" We might need her help. You never know. She's a sorceress too... and she might have seen, heard or felt things that no one else has, but I won't be able to know if she stays asleep in the Infirmary. " Aurilia said stopping her two friends before they started arguing again.
" So what are we going to do?" They both asked simultaneously.
"Using a spell, I will be going into the same unconscious state that Rinoa is in and will bring her back to reality that way I can -"
" You can't do that!" Brice cut her off. "Your magic's not strong enough, and there's a chance you might not come back! Sorry, but we have to find another way cause I'm not going to let you take that risk!" The golden haired women took out her spear, and held it out in front of her.
"I've made up my mind, Brice, you can't stop me." She answered her voice full of resolve "All you can do now is make sure that nobody disturbs me while I'm out." With that she jabbed her spear head into the floor, closed her eyes, and started reciting the incantation.
Excitate vos e somno, Liberi mei. (Wake from your sleep, my children.)

Her voice sounded like mourning bells on the day of a funeral, and as she spoke the last words, they seemed to slowly fade away and felt like they were coming from somewhere far. No sooner had the last sentence been uttered, did the woman's hand loosen their hold on the weapon and she started falling to the ground, only to be caught by Brice, who picked her up and gently placed her on her bed.
He let out a long, slow breath. She always did this, putting others before herself, and worrying him sick in the process. Though somehow she always made it through, it still bothered him to watch the object of his affection so willingly plunged head first into danger when he was suppose to be protecting her. He and Maura having been asked to: "keep her out of harm's way" by Aurilia's biological father twelve years ago while they all still lived in that grey house, which was just a mere blur in his memory, and him afterwards becoming her "knight", while Ultimacia was a threat to her and the worlds safety, he was never able to actually help her when she really needed it. He cursed under his breath at his weakness and uselessness. The young man looked up, and holding one of the golden haired woman's hands, using the other, he removed one of the pieces of hair that was in her mouth.
"You haven't told her how you feel about her yet, have you?" Maura asked in a relaxed tone. Brice looked up surprised and removed both of his hands quickly. He hadn't noticed that he was being watched; last he remembered she had her eyes closed. She smirked "I guess that means no, but, then again, you're so obvious about it I don't think you need to" The mans head shot up, his bronze eyes displaying an unusual amount of hate. He was about to say something very nasty, that would have offended her, when Aurilia body suddenly arched upwards and she gave a painful cry. Sweat drops started rolling down her face and she was now frowning something very curious that meant nothing good.
Maura let out a loud breath then said: "Now is not the time to argue. Forgive me, but I find it a shame that you haven't told her yet. You, of all people, know that she wouldn't look at you any differently if you did, and she might even answer something that you weren't expecting."
"That's not true and you know it" He answered, ignoring the shocked look on his conscious comrade's face. "We're back in Balamb now, remember? She'll be too busy restoring everybody else's memory to worry about little old me." The black haired woman just shook her head, took out a cloth, walked over to the bed, and wiped her friends face.
"She doesn't love him anymore Brice! And even if she did, she wouldn't run after him because she knows he is happier with someone else. As I'm sure you know, she puts the joy of the people that she cares for before herself. This is why she is saving Rinoa, for her good friend Squall" He snorted.
"Oh I know she wouldn't run after him, but what's the point of telling her if she doesn't care for me? Only to bother her? Cause afterwards she'd be extra careful not to hurt me feelings."
"Brice, Brice, Brice you are so naïve when it comes to these kinds of things." She smiled. "Maybe the only reason she never took you into consideration is because she thought you too much of a friend, but if you told her, maybe it would make her realize her true feelings for you"
"You think?" He asked. Slowly starting to be convinced.
"Well it's a bit too corny for my liking, but yeah, I do." Then they were both silent, after all what more was there to say, but as Brice looked down at the golden haired women he became more and more aware of each passing second.
Please, he thought, bring her back!
************
Aurilia had felt herself fall right through the floor and into the realm in which the misguided sorceress was situated. She touched down lightly on rotting floorboards, and looked around. Everything was familiar to her, as she had been here, in her dreams, many times before. She already had seen the white haired man, and, like Rinoa, had dreamed of her death caused by his hands. She noticed out of the corner of her eye that the black haired woman she had come to fetch was taking cover behind a desk. Smiling she walked over and was about to say 'You don't need to hide yourself since nobody but me can see you' when a bright flash spread through the room and then she felt herself falling once again but this time through an endless white space.
She joined her hands together in front of her face and whispered a few words of power and thinking at the same time 'fly I need to fly!' No sooner had she finished her sentence did beautiful golden phoenix wings sprout from her back, and stop her endless fall.
"Phew!" the golden eyed woman said aloud wiping sweat from her brow. She really had to be careful about using her magic because if she used too much of it she wouldn't be strong enough to bring herself home much less Rinoa, who she had come to get. She looked around only to notice that the sorceress was nowhere to be seen. Strange, she thought, it is white everywhere I should be able to spot some blue dot. Folding her feathery apparels behind her she plunged head first, downwards hoping to catch the sorceress.
After a short thirty second dive, she caught sight of Squalls angel, but the strange thing was that she was disappearing. First her head, then her body till the last inch of her shoe was gone. Aurilia carefully floated down to where she had last seen the sorceress. Then she cautiously stuck out her hand and noticed that a strange liquid like veil caused it to vanish as well. She pulled it back out to check for any damage and when she concluded that nothing had happened, taking a breath she rushed headlong into the unknown.
The barrier had been thicker then she had thought and now that she had emerged on the other side, not only did she need to catch her breath but her eyes needed to adjust to the darkness as well. Once she had recovered though, she was shocked by what she saw.
There was Rinoa sprawled out on the floor in the center of the room, hair disheveled, clothes ripped, and dark bruises had started to appear on her white skin, and walking up to her, a hand held up in front of each of them, aiming deadly blasts at Squalls angel, was Adel and Ultimacia. Aurilia had no time to think. She lunged forward her hands in front of her as well, directing spells at each evil sorceress. She got to her before the malicious witches hexes had time to harm her and unleashed her own enchantments, but only too late. As she was turning around and picking up the black haired woman, two powerful discharges hit her square in the back and sent her, as well as the person she was holding, flying across the room. Pain ripped through her entire body, as she collided with the floor, causing her to yell out in agony. She lifted her head to see that she was close to the exit, or at least what she remembered was... She thrust herself up, causing her aching muscles to protest, and with Rinoa on her back, who she noticed was slowly coming to, dash towards the way out.
She dived for it. Found her self in the odd liquid and then finally in the white space once again. She spread her wings, a difficult task with a person on her back, and started flying up wards, putting as much distance as she could with the dark corner of the black haired woman's mind.
"Hey" Aurilia said after a while. "I know you're awake how long are you planning to let me carry you?"
"Until we don't need to fly anymore" she giggled. "Unlike you, my saving angel, I don't have wings."
"You most certainly do! You're a sorceress remember? Just think about them and they will come."
"Really?!"
"Try it" With that said she did a 360 degree turn in mid-air. Rinoa not expecting this fell off. Squealing, she put her hands together in front of her face and shut her eyes tightly. After a few seconds, beautiful white wings burst out from her back, and strangely from where the design was situated. "See I told you"
"Hmm... mine are different"
"It depends on the person. Come on we need to get a bit farther away from...them."
"Right!" After a few more minutes Rinoa broke the silence one more. "By the way, thanks for saving me. I thought it would be Squall, but it was you. Then again, it makes sense, I mean he can't use magic but you can...Are you a sorceress too?"
"It's not the first time someone has had to save you from yourself then. You need to learn to use your powers there are some places even your knight can't follow you." The white winged woman frowned. She hadn't answered her question, and had avoided it all together! She was about to ask again but the golden eyed female spoke before she could. "This should be far enough. I'll be sending you back now. Your friends are worried about you."
"Wait! Before you do I want to ask you something else. Who were those people? That guy with the white hair I've seen him in my dreams before, and you were there too! They're coming for you! If there is anything I can do to –" Aurilia put a finger to Rinoa's lips and smiled.
"If I need your help I'll holler o.k.? Yes I know they're coming, they have been ever since I was young. Good-bye." She moved her hand from the other sorceress mouth to her forehead then said.

"No Maura I won't do it, I won't, I can't tell her that I lo-" Brice was interrupted by Aurilia hand squeezing his.
"You guys never stop arguing do you?" she asked grinning.
"Of course not!" replied the black haired girl smirking. "It's if we did that you'd have to start worrying. Oh and Brice red isn't your color." The young man immediately let go of Aurilia`s hand, gave the other woman a glare, and was about to tell her to fuck off, but decided against it. This wasn't the time.
"So, did it work? Is Rinoa back safe and sound?" He questioned.
"Yup. The spell worked fine, and I would have been back sooner if I hadn't encountered any problems."
"Problems?"
"Oh nothing major, just the dark side of her brain reacting to what had just happened, and taking advantage of it."
"Oh right nothing major..." Maura said rolling her eyes.
"It's amazing though" The golden eyed lady added. "Rinoa was able to intercept a conversation in between two people."
"How'd that happen?" The young man interrogated, helping his friend sit up.
"Well..." she said leaning her head against the wall. "When two people are miles from each other, but wish to speak, they can use a spell, which is available to all, to do so. They just both choose a place were they've been before, say the incantation, and voila! But, like everything else, there is a small disadvantage. Anyone who has or has had magical powers and falls asleep or unconscious at the same time as they enter a trance can 'intercept' whatever will be said. Now those two were only expecting to see each other which is why they didn't notice Rinoa there."
"But you, unlike the other two, were expecting to see her as well, so you saw her." The busty warrior stated closing her eyes once again.
"Exactly, and I didn't see anyone else because my powers aren't strong enough for me to be able to"
"So, only people who have or had powers can enter, well that limits the list of potential threats!" Guessed the energetic male cheerfully. "Whoo! Less work for us!"
"Actually no. People, who have been around someone with magic abilities long enough, can enter too." She added dashing her comrade's hope of fewer toiling. "Like a knight or his allies provided they fall asleep at the right time." The smile had returned on Brice's face and before he could even say why, Maura did so for him.
"That still reduces the possible menaces. That only means Squall, Selphie, Zell, Quistis, and..." she shuddered "Irvine."
"Don't forget Seifer and his friends" The bronze eyed man put in, getting up to search for a piece of paper to write the names down. "What were their names again?"
"Fujin and Raijin" Both girls said simultaneously.
"Right! Oh and your mothe-"
"Yes her too" Aurilia cut him off before he could finish his sentence. Her friends exchanged a knowing look before returning to what they had been doing. "I still wasn't strong enough to see if they were there, but Rinoa could" She frowned as a pain shot through her head.
"Well then, we'll go find out what we can, and you rest up. I've got a feeling you'll need your strength for what's coming." Maura said moving towards the door.
"Yeah, but can you do me a favor. Before you leave get me a bottle of pills for headaches, I've got a really bad one coming on." Asked the golden haired woman, kicking off her shoes to get into bed. "A glass of water too please." Brice came to her with what she had demanded and once she had taken the medication, settled down to sleep, and was snoozing away, both her friends exited the room quietly.
"It still surprises me how you can look at her with such love in your eyes and even dare to tuck her in, but you won't tell her how you feel."
"It's my business what I decide to tell her or not, now leave me alone with this, we got a job to do and this is no time to be slacking off." He walked off towards the cafeteria, letting her go to the training center, like he knew she would prefer. Maura smiled.
"I'm just saying this because I know that she feels the same way about you, but that, like you, she is to afraid to announce this to you. It would make both you and her really happy, and nothing would bring me greater joy then seeing the two of you finally get together because I know that this love will last for as long as you both live. Just to let you know." But Brice was already out of earshot. With one last glance she shook and walked towards the training center.
Authors Endless Rambling: Well sorry it took so long to put up this new chapter, but I've been soooooooo busy! NEways thanks again for all the great reviews, and don't forget that if you want to read the next chapter you have to look under the new title 'The Song of the Phoenix'.
