Chapter One: Back To The Way We Were

Author's Notes: This takes place after last night's episode. Hope you enjoy... even though it's short. Explanation for the length will be at the bottom.
Disclaimer: Nah, of course not.

"Hey, Cohen."
The sweet, melodic voice of a certain girl from behind him caused him to pause in his steps. With a sigh, he turned back to face her, a bit apprehensive about coming face to face with her. When she stood merely a few feet away from him, he looked away, his hands finding its way quickly into his pockets.
She looked him casually with her head tilted a little to the side. "So uh... what's up?" she asked, feeling a bit uneasy herself.
Seth looked back up at her and forced a small smile. "Oh, not much. Just back to the usual is all—reading comic books, playing video games, annoying Ryan... you know, the kind of things geeky, nerdy, dorky people do," he replied with a shrug as if he didn't care.
Summer didn't find it funny, rather, she found it fairly hurtful. How or why was beyond her. Perhaps it was because he didn't seem as affected by their breakup as she was. After all, it had been she who had broken up with him.
"Oh," was all she said back to him before turning to look away, just as he had done before. Silence took over the next few minutes and Seth immediately took it to his advantage to get away. He just couldn't stand it anymore.
"Look, Summer, I have to go. Class starts in a few minutes and I—" He couldn't finish his sentence. She had she cut him off.
"Cohen, listen..." she said with a hint of desperation in her voice, "Can we ever go back to how it was before all of this happened?"
His eyes suddenly clouded, shutting her off from seeing the pain. "You want to go back to when you completely ignored me?" he asked somewhat coldly. As if breaking up with me because of your father wasn't enough.
Immediately, Summer shook her head. She didn't want to go back to way back then. She had been so insensitive to his feelings. If she wanted to be that girl again, she wouldn't be here right now, trying to patch things up. "No, Cohen, no. That's not what I mean. Just, um... you know, like back to when we were just friends. Things were so much more easier back then."
"Uh huh..." he said slowly, nodding his head a little. If friendship was all that she was offering right now, then he'd take it. It was better than nothing. "Alright, sure. Friends. That sounds good to me."
"Great," she said with a smile, "Thanks, Cohen. I guess I'll see you later then?" she asked as she began to walk away, heading towards the school building. He nodded towards her way and she waved goodbye to him before disappearing out of his sight.
Seth sighed.
It was going to be a long day.

Author's Notes: Okay, this is THE shortest chapter I've ever written in my life. I apologize; it's about one in the morning right now, I'm sleepy and tired... and doing homework. I'm not even supposed to be up. I was supposed to be out a few hours ago, like RIGHT after I saw the O.C., but I had to get a least something written out before I'm able to sleep in peace... so, here it is. I promise you next chapter will make it up... I usually don't upload any chapter or story without it being at least a thousand words.
Please leave a review. I'd appreciate it so much. :)
