CHAPTER ONE
Robin stood in front of the office coffeemaker with Michael's empty coffee cup clutched in her delicate hand. She had asked Michael if he would like a refill 10 minutes before, and when he smiled and nodded, Robin had picked up his cup and walked slowly to the coffeemaker. She had been sitting in front of her computer all day going over old case files and was looking for any excuse to get up from her chair.
Michael's hand automatically reached for his coffee cup in the middle of typing, only to find empty air.
"Huh?, "Michael blinked, looking up from his monitor. "Oh, hey Robin, are you holding my cup for ransom or something?" Michael looked over at Robin expecting an answer but instead he saw her standing very still, holding the cup and looking intently out the window.
"Robin?" Michael called her name once more. "Robin!" This time he shouted and Michael saw her visible shake herself.
"Oh Michael...I'm sorry. I was just..." Robin sighed and quickly poured Michael a cup of coffee.
"Are you okay?" Michael asked, gratefully accepting the warm cup from her. "You looked like you were in a trance."
Robin sat down in her chair and quickly got back up again. Answering Michael she said, "I'm fine. I guess I'm just a little tired."
"Sitting in front of a monitor all day can do that to you." He agreed sympathetically. "Why don't you go home for the day. Everyone else is gone." Michael smiled at Robin, put his headphones back on and went back to typing.
Robin nodded and switched her computer off. Everyone else had left an hour ago but Robin was determined to go through all the old case files before tomorrow. She knew Amon would be back from where ever he had mysteriously gone to 3 days ago and he would be expecting her to be familiar with all the old files.
Amon hadn't even bothered to tell her he was leaving. She only found out he was going to be gone for 3 days when Zaizan told her she was to work with Karasuma until Amon's return.
Amon doesn't trust me, yet. But if I can show him I am trustworthy and finish these files... Robin thought. Not tonight though. I wish I knew why I feel so out of place. I feel like I'm about to jump out of my skin. She picked up her coat from the coat stand by the elevator and waved goodbye to Michael. Maybe I'll feel better if I go home and clean a little or I could visit the church. Michael was sipping from his coffee mug and lifted it to Robin in a mock salute.
The elevator doors slide open and just as Robin started to walk in she heard Michael's phone ring. She stopped. A suddenly cold chill washed over her, settling into the pit of her stomach.
"STN-J Headquarters. What? Are you sure?" Michael paused, listening. "Okay, but Mr. Zaizan isn't here and Amon's not due back until...yeah, I know." Michael looked over at Robin who had ran back to his desk when he answered the phone. "We'll be there." Michael hung up and looked up at Robin. He was pale and wide eyed.
Robin realized she was holding her breath and let it out to ask, "Who was that, Michael? What has happened?"
"Robin, you need to go to this location. "He quickly scribbled something, Robin could only assume was an address. "And hurry." He gave it to Robin. "That was the police. I need to call everyone—to see who doesn't answer. I mean it can't be true. Everyone should be home. I think." Michael realized he was babbling as he reached out for Robin's hand to steady his thoughts. "They think they found a member of STN-J...dead."
