Disclaimer: I own Rosannah Evans-Lupin, and that is it.

My heart hammering against my ribcage, my arm burning with the fire of a thousands suns I take one last, longing glance at Rowena's Haven. An ache deep in my chest as I see my husband and my daughter in the doorway, both looking at me with a solemn dread that I know I will remember for the rest of my life. Nothings saddens a Mother more than seeing her one year old daughter wearing such an expression. Except maybe seeing her and her father go through almost back-breaking pain once a month.

"Evans?" Severus urges quietly.

I tear my eyes away from such a sight, blinking back tears that Severus tastefully ignores.

Gripping my wand until my knuckles turn white, I enforce my mental barriers and school my expression into one of dedication and loosely masked adoration. It's quite convincing if I say so myself. My Father always said I would make a superb actress. A better liar, my sister would add snidely.

Both are true, and both are what have kept me alive so long. That and my trophy-awarding duelling skills, bordering on insane dedication, Head Girl Status and because Albus favoured me, of course.

Lord Voldemort was always one for irony.

Remus and Rossie fade from view. One minute I'm standing in front of them at Rowena's Haven, the next their image's are slipping through my fingers and Severus and myself are simply another two faceless bodies in a legion of Death Eaters.

Of Murderers.

Of shadows.

Of fools.

Of Grim Reapers, our hearts black and our souls damned.

And before us stands the most damned of us all, the devil incarnate himself. Crimson eyes as red as mine are green, as bloody as mine are grass, Lord Voldemort steps out of the shadows, revealing something that makes me pale.

Oh god, let it not be true. Please, let it not be true.

Author's notes: Okay, it's your fault this has turned into a multi-chaptered story instead of the one-off it was supposed to be, so you better review!
