"Hello everybody!" I said cheerfully to the Ducks in the lunchroom. "Are
you feeling alright?" Charlie asked suspiciously. I giggled as I nodded.
"Did the varsities turn into chickens? Is it a guy? Or are you on drugs?"
Averman asked. "No, no and definitely NO!" I replied slightly offended. Is
it so wrong to be nice to your friends? "Either way, I like this Jean
better" Adam asked happily. "Thank you!" I said. At least someone
appreciated the change.
I was walking down the hall (the guys finally let it go and allowed me to walk on my own) when I saw a bulletin board. It was covered with notices but one caught my attention above all others: Cheerleading tryouts on the 10th March. I stared at the notice. I smirked; this is going to be good!
I went up to my dorm to practice my routine. As I practiced, I thought about my cousin Katrina, she was a cheerleader. She was tall and slim, had hazel brown eyes and the grace of a swan. I usually managed to squeeze myself into the cheerleading squad but my cousin was ALWAYS the captain (I should know because every single conversation with her would include the words "cheerleading captain"). She was a good captain, she was strict but reasonable. She usually never scolded anyone except for me; she always put extra pressure on me for some reason. I practiced and practiced; my cousin's toughness had made a big impact on me. Perfect! Every single step is perfect! I'm ready for the tryouts. I just hope I'm good enough...
I smiled gleefully as I walked back to my dorm. I had just finished the tryouts and...I had gotten into the squad! I stopped in my tracks, why am I going to my dorm? I should tell Connie and Julie. Connie has always wanted to be in the cheerleading squad and Julie was just a nice person to tell, they'd be happy to know.
I ran to the rink and walked in. No one was there. The cool breeze swept against my skin. I loved that feeling. A sudden memory came up in my mind: I was about to go up and do my figure skating routine at the annual ice- skating competition. I had won this competition for 3 years running but this was routine was going to blow the judges away; it WOULD have been my best routine ever. But than something bad happened. I was about to go on, 2 more people and it would have been my turn to shine. That's when I saw my father running towards me, his face grinning widely. He threw his arms around me and said "You got the scholarship to Eden Hall! I'm so proud f you!" Immediately I felt all my happiness and confidence drain out of me. My father had always wanted me to go to Eden Hall but I couldn't bear to leave Singapore. I smiled weakly and he let go of me. "Jean Wong, you're up" A lady said sternly. I said goodbye to my father and went onto the ice. But the second I touched the ice, I couldn't remember my routine, I couldn't even remember the basic figure skating tricks. The thought of leaving Singapore was too overwhelming and everything became a blank. I could hear people whispering and I skated off the ice, afraid to take any more humiliation, I could never figure skate after that. A sudden nudge on my shoulder shook me out of my thoughts. "Hi!" Julie said. I smiled at her and told her about me making the cheerleading squad. She congratulated me and gave me a hug. I liked having Julie as a friend; she was calm and always cheerful. I said goodbye to her and went up to do my homework, and before long, I totally forgot about my figure skating incident. ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * Author's note: Ho everyone, I just have to have my author's note this one time!! First of all, I'm very sorry if the first two chapters were no good but this chapter is probably better cause I had my friend, Tamsin to help me edit my story, and I must say she did a good job. And thanks to Stephanie, she was my personal critic, yeah and for all those that read my story, YOU GUYS ROCK!!!!!!!!
