Rating: PG

Spoilers: None for TWW, but Ben's last one for L&O.

AN: Got this idea watching L&O today.  It actually wasn't the episode that this based on, but still inspiration struck.  A little flight of fantasy, but it made me smile.

He had always been struck by the similarities as he watched her work the press briefing, but being in the same room, breathing the same air, it was haunting.  They walked the same, talked the same, and even shook hands the same way.  But, she was alive and Ann Madsen was decidedly dead.  He watched her glide around the room, talking to dignitaries.  He couldn't tear his eyes off her.

A figure floated up next to him, laughing quietly in his ear that she would introduce him, if he was that interested.  He shook his head, explaining that she just reminded him of a woman he once knew.  He almost said that she reminded him of a woman he once killed, but feared the look of disgust on her beautiful Irish face.

She asked if it was someone from the New York City DA's office.  He nodded his head, but didn't elaborate.

Feeling him lapse into a saddened silence, she nudged his shoulder and nodded to the dance floor.  Smiling at his old friend's assistant, he led her to the dance floor.

Even as he glided around the dance floor with the redhead, his eyes fell to the auburn statuesque woman across the room.  Would Ann Madsen done good thing with her life?  Would she have had a rich, full life in the Witness Protection Program, if she hadn't been killed?  Would he have left the DA's office, if she had lived?  Would Ann blame him as he blamed himself?

The woman across the room caught his eye.  She smiled brightly and winked carefully.

Suddenly, new questions filled his mind.

Had anyone seen Ann Madsen's body?

And more importantly:  What was CJ Cregg's past?

Maybe Ann didn't blame him after all.
