Atari

By Alden

Silence. The room is filled with it, falling over the two sitting figures like invisible cloaks, stimulating the thoughts where the tongues do not go.

Hinata sits there, looking at her partner in play, and smiles. She feels perfectly relaxed, for one of the first times in her life. There's nobody yelling at her, blaming her, or making her cry. There's no-one making her blush, no-one making her laugh, or smile. She is serious. She closes her eyes for a second, thankful, reaches into the bowl...

And places a white stone on the board.

"I was thinking you'd never place your piece... Though that's an interesting move..." Shikamaru smiles. This isn't troublesome. He's relaxed, yet serious; working but not moving around a lot. He's having more of an intellectual battle this tijme, analysing every piece and placement. He's not trying, but he's not careless. He refuses to slaughter the one he's playing with.Or rather, he finds if he tried, he'd actually have to try. Hinata, serious, and Shikamaru, loose. An equal board... And that's what makes the game worth playing.

This is what he wants in life. To have an average life, maybe. Stay a Chuunin, or make it to Jounin... Marry a smart wife, who is kind enough to let him laze around, but firm enough to make him train every so often. One who's devious enough to play a good round of Go, and can analyze his moves well enough to have a chance at Shogi. One who can coax him without annoying him, soothe him without irritating him. If he is the cranky old man, she should be the kindly grandmother, who bakes cookies and listens to children's woes.

She wants a good life, with a kind husband. One who will noyt judge her, blame her or ignore her. One who will smile, but not too easily. One who can go at her pace in life. A steadfast, true partner who won't surrender. An inspiration and lover, without being too demanding. Someone she can take care of...

The silence between moves leaves room for interesting thoughts...

-No surrender...-

Authour's Note: Atari is a term in Go where the placement of one more stone will capture some of the other player's stones. I thought it fit...
