He was alone. He didn't need to think hard to figure out why. He couldn't believe the Sorting Hat had put him in Slytheran. Of all the houses, he was put in Slytheran. He, who had been called a Mudblood by his own father. He, who had nearly been killed by that same father. He, who was now the only non-pureblood in the House, and as such, the butt of every in House joke, prank, and cruelty imaginable. He was tormented mercilessly. He could dodge some of the jinxes and curses thrown at him but not all. And he couldn't dodge any of the insults.
In a school full of students, he was alone.
He was alone. No one wanted to get chummy with a blind kid. Least of all one in Hufflepuff. Clearly, a nobody going nowhere. He found it hard to relate to anyone with the precious gift of sight. And he had never met anyone who could relate to him, even if they where blind. His other senses worked fine, but all they usually told him that he was alone. His ears carried the pitying whispers bearing his name to his mind. His skin sent informed him of the fact that no one touched him if they could help it. His nose told him of the scent of flowers, which he had heard were very beautiful, and his tongue brought him the tastes of a cool spring morning that he had heard were glorious, both things he could never and would never see.
In a school full of students, he was alone.
He wasn't alone. He was followed day by day by voices. Lots of voices. Some were helpful and some were not. There were scholarly voices, there were simple voices. There were loud voices, there were soft voices. Some talked about work, others about fun. Some talked about adventure, others about love. Some said that there was no difference. Some talked about nothing at all, and just talked. Sometimes they talked amongst themselves. It was the smarter voices that had gotten him into Ravenclaw.
And even with his head full of voices, he was still alone.
She was alone. And she didn't mind. Really. After all, what could be wrong with being completely…
totally…
utterly…
alone.
