"Crazy bastard!" Sirius breathed, looking down from a window in a white hall.
"Huh?" James asked from beside him.
"Dumbledore."
"What's the old nut down now?" he laughed.
"He's sent some girl back in time to try and befriend Snape."
"And what would be the positive outcome?" James asked.
"Thinks that it will make Snape less sour."
"Makes sense, I hope it works."
"Yeah right, God himself couldn't keep Snape from being sour!" The two laughed and walked from the window.
"Oi, Marina!" a boy with carefully messed hair called across the hallway as classes were letting out for the day. Marina caught sight of him and walked up.
"What is it? Do I know you?"
"No, no but I know you."
"And who are you?"
"Sirius, Sirius Black at your service."
"And what would make you think that I required your service?" she asked, more surprised then anything else.
"Well, I heard that you're tutoring with Snivley, I'm here to take you off his hands."
"Sni-, you're the boy from the Room of Requirement!"
"Pardon?"
"Never mind, what do you mean?"
"Well, I and my friends, James and Remus, are the best students in the year. We're willing to tutor you so you won't have to wallow in the company of one, Snivley."
"Severus is a wonderful person! He's the smartest person I know!"
"You must not know many people Ms. Ferilli."
"Well if they're like you I don't really want to Mr. Black!" with that she spun around and left the boy, his mouth hanging open. Little did she, or Sirius know that Severus was standing well within ear-shot.
Severus didn't know what it was but he had a, well....good feeling in the pit of his stomach. It was kind of warm and soft like a bubble bath. That was the first time someone actually stood up for him. No one had even talked to him before. Despite himself he felt his cheeks burn. Not wanting to be left in an abandoned hallway, he went in the direction of the library which happened to be the direction in which Marina had so recently ambulated.
Catching up with her, he caught her arm. "Marina, hey! Where are you going."
"Good afternoon Sev! You scared me!"
"I'm sorry," Snape's face fell slightly.
"No, no, good scared," she put in quickly. "I'm going to the library, care to join me?"
"Sure!" The two walked in silence toward the huge, oak doors that stood in front of the fountain of knowledge. Severus pushed the door open for her and they stepped inside. "What are you looking for?"
"Oh, just some light reading. I just need a break from text books. Does Hogwarts have any good novels?"
"Does it? It's got the best, muggle and magical alike." Severus showed her toward a back section. They walked through the rows of books and Severus looked intently through them. Marina followed with a bemused look on her face. "Here we are, one of my favorites!" Marina took it and turned it over. In gold letters "The Demon" was embossed.
""The Demon?", what's that about?"
"It's about a man who's plagued by the memory of his dead mother. There's a lot of mind game stuff in it."
"Sound's depressing."
"It's not really depressing. It's weird, I can't describe it."
"Piper Pillar, I've never heard of her."
"Not very well known. She wrote this one and "Precipice" that's all she's written."
"So it's not really depressing?"
"No, somber is more of the word I'd use."
"Do you have anything you want to look for?"
"Um, well, I need a new potions book."
"I guessed you'd read all the books on potions that are in here," Marina laughed sweetly. It wasn't a particularly wonderful laugh, a bit too throaty, but it was real. Her eyes lit up when she laughed and her nose crinkled.
"I don't think anyone could read all of the books on potions that are at Hogwarts," Severus smiled in response. That was about as far as he went. His smile seemed a bit pained. It was like he didn't really know how but he was honest. His smile was honest and real and pleasureful even if it wasn't a treat to watch.
"Let's go to the potions section then," she pointed toward the far end of the library. She had the book clutched in her hand and the reached the high bookcases in no time. Marina lost Severus for a moment as he dove into the ocean of books laid out in front of them. He came back a moment later with a couple of dusty tombs in his bony, white hands. "Anything else?"
"Maybe a book on defense," Severus answered.
"God Sev, you read so much sometimes I think your head is going to explode!" He only smiled and they walked toward the opposite side. He got a couple more books and walked up to the desk at the front. Severus dumped the books in front of Euclid, the man that practically lived in the library.
"You have too many books," the old man muttered so softly that they could barely hear him.
"What?" Severus asked looking at the stack of books, willing them to shrink in to one huge book.
"Too many books Mr. Snape, too many."
"But-"
"Oh Sev, you picked up a couple of my books!" Marina cut in, grabbing a few books off the top of the stack. "There Master Euclid, carry on!" she nodded at the big book of books and students names. Euclid recorded Severus's books and Marina stepped up, casting her enlarged stack on the desk.
They walked out of the door and Severus stopped her. "Thanks Marina, that was really, well, umm..."
"Nice? It was nothing. Here, just make sure they get in on time. I've already gotten a hefty fee piled up in there." He grinned at her. It was almost a beautiful smile, almost.
He took the books from her. "It's almost time for dinner." Severus breathed.
"Hey Sev, can we go to Hogsmeade now?"
"Huh?"
"I've never been to Hogsmeade."
"I-I could ask the Headmaster."
"Cool, could you? I'd love to just have dinner there, the two of us."
Severus was speechless. Was this a date? He had no idea, he'd never been on one. The only thing he knew to do was run off to Dumbledore's office. He reached there in record time and breathed the password. "What ever is the matter Mr. Snape?" the old man exclaimed.
"Nothing's the matter. I, well, Marina, that is, Ms. Ferilli wants to know if you could give us permission to have dinner in Hogsmeade tonight." Dumbledore pondered the question for a moment. Then, slowly, he answered.
"I think that would be alright. Just be back by curfew." Severus beamed. I mean, he really beamed. It was the first big smile he'd ever had. Dumbledore was shocked but didn't have time to say anything more for the youth bulleted out the door.
Severus found Marina standing at the front entrance. She had only changed out of her robes but he seemed to think she'd completely transformed. "How'd you know he'd say yes?" Severus asked, cocking his head to the side.
"I just had a feeling," she grinned. Truth be told, she knew he'd say yes because it's what he wanted. At least it was what his future self wanted. "Are you going to take off your robes?" she asked. He blushed and pulled off the robe. Ever since the incident with his boxers he'd made sure he was always fully clothed. He was wearing an old pair of jeans he'd found in a trunk in his attic. He had on a black T-shirt that came down to his wrists. "Let's go, I'm hungry," she said, grabbing his arm.
The two walked quickly across the breezy, springly lawns of Hogwarts. Severus could only stare at the very purposeful Marina. They walked through the gates out into Hogsmeade. "Where should we go?" she demanded, grinning at him.
"Um, we could go to the "Three Broomsticks"."
"What's that?"
"A pub, the respectable one in town."
"Is there any place else?" she asked as she wrinkled her nose.
"We could go to the coffee house down the street, "The Artful Dodger"."
"That sounds better." Severus lead the way to the bright and cheery coffee house. They stepped in and found it pleasantly full. He lead the way to his favorite table that was situated in the back, away from all of the action. "What do they have to eat?"
"Pastries, sandwiches, stuff like that. Do you want me to get you anything?"
"Yeah, I want a pickle and cheese sandwich on whole wheat with mustard. Oh and a green tea," he raised his eyebrows. "I've liked them forever!"
"Whatever you say," he turned around and went up to the counter. He ordered her food and returned with two trays. His carried a small turkey sandwich with mayonnaise, lettuce, tomatoes, and olives. He also had a large cup of cappuccino. They settled back for a night of music and each other's company. Neither of them knew, however, that each other's company was exactly what the other one wanted.
"Underground I'm waiting
Just below the crowded avenue
Watchin' red lights fading out of view
Of the air feels heavy
Everything just passes by
And I think I'm a little shy
Meet me outside above ground
I see you on your way
I'll be with you someday, someday
Drawing lines above my head
But the fan keeps spinning over me
Just my thoughts to keep me company
Now I know I'm ready
Pour the night into a glass
Can I sip it slow and make it last?
Meet me outside above ground
I see you on your way
I'll be with you someday, someday
Meet me outside above ground
I see you on your way
I'll be with you someday, someday......
