I was just going to give you one chapter today, but because it was a Jack chapter, I wanted to give you more, so double update!

[8]

Jack Bristow lounged in his chair, awaiting the next hour before he would be meeting with CIA Director Devlin about saving his daughter from this 'Steve' character.

Rose popped her head in the door, "Mr. Bristow, you have a phone call on line 2."

'Who is it this time?' he asked himself, 'It obviously can't be 'Steve' -- I have a few hours until he contacts me, and it won't be Devlin unless he's canceling our meeting.'

"Who is it Rose?" he questioned, "Did they tell you their name this time?"

"A Mr. Vaughn?" Rose raised her eyebrows.

Jack nodded, "Patch him through, and from now on if he calls you can just patch him through without coming in here."

"Yes Mr. Bristow," she replied and closed the door behind her.

He looked at the clock, it was just barely eight in the morning, which meant in LA it was around five -- he sure was an early riser, maybe he head hired the right man.

"Jack Bristow here."

"Mr. Bristow, this is Michael Vaughn --" but he was cut off.

"Mr. Vaughn, weren't you supposed to contact me yesterday with an update?" Jack asked, slightly perturbed.

"I told you I would contact you as soon as possible," Michael defensively explained, "I won't ever guarantee a time that I will contact you, only when I have a minute without Sydney around, you wouldn't want your daughter to know that you're requesting daily updates because you can't take a few days off and come out here yourself, now would you?"

"Are you threatening me Mr. Vaughn?" Jack hissed.

"With all due respect sir, I think you're in no position to be demanding when I contact you," Michael pointed out, "Because if you think about it, I am your only contact with Sydney, if I quit supplying you information on your daughter's safety, you won't find out anything, because she won't truthfully tell you how she is."

Jack stayed silent, because he knew Michael was right, if it weren't for him he wouldn't find out anything about if someone had come after her, that was just something Sydney wouldn't tell him, "How *is* she doing?"

"She's doing fine -- nothing's been out of the ordinary yet, but I'm keeping an eye out," Michael explained, "But I think I hear her waking up, I'll contact you as soon as I can -- no promises."

Before Jack could say anything, Michael hung up, and he went back to waiting for his meeting with Devlin.

He sat down at the reserved table and awaited the arrival of the CIA Director.

The waiter approached him, and with a very thick accent, asked, "Would you like to order now?"

Jack shook his head, "No thank you, I'm waiting for someone to arrive." The waiter nodded and walked away once again.

Next thing he knew, Devlin was sitting in front of him, "Is it safe for us to talk here?"

Devlin nodded, "I've got snipers set up on the rooftops around here, if anyone nears here that shouldn't, they'll back us up. Now explain the situation."

"My first contact came two days ago, it was a note telling me if I valued my daughter's life I would meet the demands. I was not told what the demands were in the first contact. In the envelope with the note were pictures. Of my daughter, basically everywhere she normally goes in a day. This person has been stalking her."

He handed Devlin the taped conversation.

"The second contact came yesterday, it was the same threat about my daughter, this time thought I was contacted over the phone on an untraceable line by a man who called himself 'Steve.' He said they would leave my daughter alone if I got them something, something that was in the CIA's possession."

"Tell me about your daughter," Devlin requested.

"Sydney -- she's my life. I mean, I don't know what I'd do without her, after my wife died she was all that kept me in this world."

"And where is she now?" Devlin asked.

"She's still back in LA, I couldn't make her pack up her life like that, I hired Michael Vaughn -- he's with the secret service -- to watch over her, I heard he's the best."

"That he is," Devlin affirmed.

"You know of Michael Vaughn?"

"Of course I know of him," Devlin answered, "I'm the one who got him that job. Now back on topic, what exactly did 'Steve' say the CIA had that his organization wants?"

"Something called the Rambaldi Manuscript," Jack shrugged.

Devlin's eyes widened a little bit, then he thought a minute, before answering, "We'll make the exchange."
