Once again he sat in his office waiting for a phone call, it seemed to be the story of his life - waiting and waiting and waiting.

He hit the intercom button that would connect him to Rose just outside his office door, "Rose have there been any calls, or has anyone stopped by with a delivery?"

It took a second before he received a reply, "I'm sorry Mr. Bristow, there hasn't been anything yet, but I'll let you know when there is."

Jack nodded even though she couldn't see him, "Thank you Rose." He went back to the menial task of doing nothing, awaiting the phone call that could change his life.

And he hated the fact that he had to wait at all.

But, he didn't have to wait long as the intercom beeped and Rose's voice sounded telling him that he had a phone call, informing him that it was a man named Steve.

Taking a deep breath, he hit record so the tape recorder started again before he finally picked up the phone, ready to face this again.

"Hello?" he calmly asked.

"Good morning Mr. Bristow," 'Steve' sneered, "I'm sure you couldn't wait to hear from me."

"You could say that," Jack cryptically answered.

'Steve' got right down to business, "So I assume you talked to who you needed to talk to about what I wanted."

"Yes I contacted who I needed to," Jack replied through clenched teeth, "And as soon as you set up the meeting, the manuscript will be in my hands."

"Good job Jack," he smirked, "I knew with the right motivation you'd make me proud."

"Why don't you shut your mouth 'Steve'?" Jack exclaimed sarcastically, "And leave my daughter the hell alone."

"Oh, she'll be fine Jack; I mean that's why you did hire that bodyguard for her after all, wasn't it?"

So he had recently been watching her, Michael hadn't been with Sydney for more than three days.

"Can we just get on with this conversation?" Jack snarled, "You know, I do have some stuff that needs to get done today, I do have a job."

"Patience is a virtue Mr. Bristow," 'Steve' replied with.

"One that I do not have."

'Steve' sighed, "Fine Mr. Bristow. We will meet Tuesday morning at the café around the corner from your office."

And then the line went dead.

Jack hung the phone back up, and stopped the tape, and an hour later, as instructed, he dialed Devlin's office number.

When Director Devlin answered, Jack cut right to the point, "Did you find out anything?"

"His voice is not logged into our system which means that whoever he is, he has never been heard of by anyone in the intelligence business in the United States. But if any other information is found out, I'll be sure to contact you."

"Be sure to call my cell phone, I'm flying out to Los Angeles tonight to spend the weekend with my daughter," Jack told him, before immediately getting back to the point, "But did I keep him on the phone long enough?"

Devlin sighed, "We were able to track the phone number."

"Where was it?" Jack asked anxiously, ready to get the person, or persons, responsible for threatening his daughter.

"We were working in conjunction with the LA branch of the CIA simply because of the fact that that is where Sydney is," he explained, "'Steve' was calling from a payphone about 10 minutes away from her apartment, and by the time the CIA got agents down there, he was gone and there was no proof that he had been there in the first place."

"So what does that mean?" Jack inquired.

"For now, it's a dead end."
