Prologue
"Autism? What's that?" Asked a four year old Mia, clinging to her mother's Sunday dress. But Mia knew there had been no church today, because it was Thursday and because her mommy had just brought home her new baby sister.
"It's something to do with your little sister's brain." Began Mia's mother, rocking the new baby in her arms. "She's…"
"Special." Offered Mia's grandfather who'd just walked through the front door carrying her mother's suitcase. Mia turned to her grandfather and raised a thin, light brown, eyebrow.
"Am I special?" Her grandfather chuckled at this.
"Not in the same way. Your little sister…"
"When Maggie grows up, she'll act different than you or me, or even Grandpa John." Finished Mia's mother, throwing a glance to her father to confirm her wording. Grandpa John gave a nod.
"Maggie? Is that her name?" Asked Mia, looking from her grandfather to her mother. Both smiled and nodded. "Well, how will Maggie act different?" Her mother frowned at this and looked to Grandpa John for help.
"For example… when Maggie is your age, she'll still act like she is now."
"A baby?" Her mother gave a minor nod, her blue eyes shone a mixture of sadness and love. "Then I can help take care of her when I'm a grown up!" Said Mia in a singsong voice before dancing off to her left giggling happily.
Grandpa John watched with a smile going from ear to ear. "Like I said, she's special, but not in the same way."
