Unlikely

Chapter One: New Home, New Lives

Mia, now sixteen-years-old, and her twelve-year-old sister Maggie, stands on the front step of a large white house, belonging to their new guardians, Aunt Annette and Uncle Tom.

"Maggie, ring the doorbell please."  Says Mia patiently.  Obediently, Maggie presses the button to the right of the door.  Both wait silently as they listen to the doorbell echoing throughout the large house.

"Is mommy here?" Asks Maggie shyly.

For a second Mia is silent, listening to someone's footsteps coming towards the door from the inside.

"No Maggie, mom's gone."

Before Maggie can question further, a woman in a pink dress answers the door and beams down at them.  The woman also wears white high-heels as well as a white scarf, hanging lazily from her bony shoulders.

"Oh hello!  You must be Mia," she shakes Maggie's hand lightly, "and you Maggie," she turns and beams at Mia, whose frowning.

"I'm afraid someone told you wrong.  My name is Mia, and this is my younger sister Maggie." Said Mia, trying her best to stay pleasant.

"So sorry, easy mistake to make though.   Anyway, you both may call me Aunt Annette.  Come in and meet your Uncle Tom." With that the woman turns and walks into her large home.

Neither Mia nor Maggie moves from their places at the front step however.  Maggie shakes her arms a bit as she usually does then makes a clicking noise with her tongue against the roof of her mouth, which Mia guesses is to show her discomfort.  Clutching her younger sister's hand tightly, both walk through the door.  Every so often Maggie's arm tenses, but soon she relaxes, usually after making a few more clicking noises.

"It's okay, Maggie.  I'm sure we'll love it here!" Reassures Mia in a whisper.  Maggie smiles meekly while glancing around at the contents of the rooms they're walking through.

To say the least about this particular house, it was beautiful.  The exterior had been one thing, but the interior was more than perfect.  Secretly, Mia had always wanted to be an Interior Designer when she grew older, but now…

"Mimi," whispered Maggie in her ear.  Mimi had always been her nickname around Maggie.  "Look, look!" She whispered excitedly and began pointing at something in a wondrous china cabinet.  So Mia did look and saw a miniature carved wooden horse sitting on the third shelf in the cabinet.  "Are more horses here?" Though most of the words were slurred, Mia understood what Maggie asked.

"Well hello!" Came a man's voice before Mia could answer.

"Tom, this is Mia," this time aunt Annette pointed to the right person, "and Maggie."

"Why yes, I thought so! Nice to meet you both, and let me say I'm so glad you'll be staying here!" Exclaimed the man, who like his wife couldn't be older than forty.  He extended his hand to Maggie, who only gazed at it and shook her arms.  Unfazed, he moved the handshake to Mia.  Mia too gazed at it, then after a second of consideration, finally extended her gloved hand.

Though Tom raised an eyebrow at the glove, he said nothing about it.  Perhaps this girl also had a disability, somewhat alike her sister's.

"I hope you'll both like it here." Finished Tom before releasing Mia's gloved hand.  Once he'd turned his back on them however, shivers were sent down his spine.  He could sense Mia's piercing gaze, and for reasons he didn't know, it terrified him.  "I'll be in my study, but dinner will be a special event."

But that night there would be no dinner, and Mia knew it.  The moment she'd shaken that man's hand, that stranger that called himself their uncle, she'd known it.

Author's note:  It's sort of confusing right now, but don't worry, it'll be cleared up (at least a little) in the next chapter.  Hope you're enjoying. ^-^

"Poor Uncle Tom." Said Maggie sadly.

"Yeah, poor Uncle Tom." Whispered Mia.
