Chapter Three: Sometimes God Just Isn't Listening

Again.  She'd been abandoned again.  Back at an orphanage she didn't know.  With a younger sister that didn't understand… And again she'd been cursed for something that wasn't her fault.  Cursed for something she'd tried to warn the victim about.

Sometimes God just wasn't listening, and that made life for them unfair.

Pietro stared at the new girl attending his school.  Word was that she was an orphan with a retarded sister.  Meaning she was fresh meat for him to chew out.  A sadistic smile curved his lips, his blue eyes flashing malevolently.

"So, you new here huh?" He said speedily as she walked past him.  Even though she wasn't worth the compliment, he had to admit she was pretty.

"Yeah." Mia whispered, her dull violet eyes surveying him closely as he moved impatiently about her.

"What are the tacky gloves for?" Asked Pietro, still in his hurried voice.  His blue eyes wandered over her fit body.  "Another Goth, huh?"

The accusation was true, no matter how much Mia wanted to deny it.  Her clothes were either too small for her, or too big.  Today the orphanage had provided her with a tight maroon t-shirt and baggy black jeans.  The jeans, Mia suspected, had once belonged to a tall boy that had been adopted and simply left them behind accidentally, or perhaps grown out of them.  Times like these, when new clothing was scarce, Mia really hated being so short.

Even the state of her silver colored hair was in poor condition.  She hadn't had a chance to wash it in three days, and because the orphanage was so poor, she didn't often get to brush her hair as the other kids there used up her bathroom time.  So she'd put her hair in a tight ponytail and tried her best to forget about it.  Unfortunately this fact Pietro didn't overlook.

"Nice hair.  What happened?  Tornado hit at your house, or your mom just hate you too much to…" but Pietro didn't get to finish his insult as he was kicked hard in a place that the sun rarely saw.  He grabbed that place and collapsed to his knees, tears brimming in his eyes.

"Don't ever mention my mother!" Growled Mia, her hollow eyes suddenly alight with fierce emotions.

Without another word she turned abruptly and swiftly walked down the hall, right before the principal poked his head out of his office, saw the sight of a temporarily injured Pietro and called the school nurse.

Author's note: Sorry about the short chapter, and gee I feel bad about hurting Pietro like that!  But the short chapters are actually to help me and you readers out.  I find it easier to remember my plots when I keep the chapters short… now I wonder how many times I can say "short chapters, chapters short"… (clever fox child walks off muttering about her short chapters under her breath)

Preview of Chapter Four: Empty Soul

"He deserved it." Came the Southern accent of Rogue as she approached her companions' lunch table.

"What do you mean Rogue?" Asked a bemused Kurt.

"I was by my locker when she kicked him." Said Rogue quietly as she took a seat furthest away from Jean Grey.  "He was talking about her dead mom."

"And since when is my business yours?" Nobody recognized the melodic voice of a girl as it came.

Disclaimer: I'm afraid I don't own X-Men: Evolution™, but for Pietro I guess that's a good thing (^.^).  I do own this plot and any of my original characters though!
