Chapter Four: Gossip

"Well I heard the new girl actually kicked him!  Can you believe it?  She actually kicked Maximoff!" Said an ecstatic Kurt, his German accent playing a big part in his speech.  "I wish Evan was still here!  He would have loved that." Suddenly the happy mood of the X-Men dulled at the mention of their deserter.

"Yeah I know." Said Scott depressingly.

For a moment nobody spoke.

"He deserved it." Came the Southern accent of Rogue as she approached her companions' lunch table.

"What do you mean Rogue?" Asked a bemused Kurt.

"I was by my locker when she kicked him." Said Rogue quietly as she took a seat furthest away from Jean Grey.  "He was talking about her dead mom."

"And since when is my business yours?" Nobody recognized the melodic voice of a girl as it came.  All eyes turned to meet the hollow violet eyes of Mia, the new girl in mention.  Kurt blushed furiously while everyone else just stared dumbfounded at her.  Her tone had been icy, and everyone appeared to have been frozen over.  In something that could be compared to a huff, Mia turned and left the small group of X-Men to her business.

"Er… I don't think we scored any points with her." Said Robert quietly, more to himself then to his frozen comrades.

"Nope." Came Todd's slimy voice.  "Too bad, she's hot!" Suddenly Todd was thrown a few feet by a kinetic force only Jean Grey could have created.  "Ahh!" His screams rang throughout the open schoolyard as he flew through the air and crashed into a group of crowded seniors.

"Like, did anyone else catch those shabby gloves the new girl was wearing?  I mean, I think they're exactly like Rogue's." Said Kitty more absent-mindedly than anything.  Rogue sent a glare at her friend.

"You know, I am sitting right here."  She growled.  Kitty smiled timidly.

"Er…"

"Yeah, I noticed them too. Wonder what her reason for wearing them is." Said Ray.

All this time, Jean had stayed silent, her pupils dilated slightly.

Author's note: Boy wasn't that chapter long! (clever fox child ducks as rotten fruit is thrown at her) … okay, okay I'm sorry again.  This chapter moved too slow and didn't really come up with anything you readers hadn't already figured out.  Well, look at the bright side, Todd did get a slamming, (~.~ giggles) … But as someone old once said, "You are your own worst critic" … in this case I hope he or she is right.

"Do I trust some and get fooled by phoniness

Or do I trust none and live in loneliness?"

This question she never needed to ask.  She trusted no one.

Disclaimer: I don't own X-Men: Evolution™.  I do own this wonderful plot, and these wonderful (but depressing) original characters.
