Trapped Misery

Who is it that looks down upon me,

Who dares gaze on one of the dead?

A mortal, it would seem, one of the Atani

My, what a pretty one you are!

You think me fair; your eyes tell me so

I was, once, more lovely than any mortal

Now I lie at the bottom of this marsh

My body long since vanished

I bear no love for the living

Rather, jealousy, and loneliness are what I feel

Surely you can feel this

You who gaze so intently at this ghostly form

Would you join me, and share in this misery?

Do you hate your own life so much, mortal?

Perhaps you do, you reach your hand into the water

Glad am I, for my hand moves to join yours

Why now do you withdraw; do I frighten you so?

Please, do not add to my torment, I intended no harm

I will show you who I once was

How I lived and died

Now do you begin to understand, mortal?

Do you now realize what I would ask of you?

You have tarried here for days

And I doubt you could tear yourself from me now

But, if you would leave, look at me once more

Remind me of a semblance of life

I beg of you, fair one, aid one of the marsh's captives

Take away my loneliness with your presence

Endure a few moments pain for one you hold dear

If I were able, I would gladly leave the water for your side

It is not so horrible down here, my lady

Provided one is not alone in the dark

Come to me then, dear one,

Your eyes and smile tell me that you will

Now you are in the water, come to my arms

No death or loneliness to part us again.
