A fire burned heartily in the Gryffindor Common Room fireplace. The high, narrow windows were transformed into tall mirrors as the sky outside darkened. By a large oak table surrounded by straight-backed chairs there sat four boys, all in their fifth year.
One was struggling with his Astrology homework, one was writing an essay on Herbology in modern times, one was reading a book on Alchemy, his homework finished and piled neatly before him, and the fourth was trying to turn his Potions textbook into a pint of Butterbeer.
Sirius Black flicked his wrist, pointed his wand at the textbook and shouted, "Caloma Alunus!" The green printing on the front cover went slightly golden, but otherwise nothing happened. Sirius cursed under his breath, his wand held aloft. He glanced at his friend Remus Lupin sitting beside him. Then his eyebrows raised as a slight smirk came to his lips.
Remus had lifted his hand to scratch his neck when he felt Sirius' eyes on him. He looked up from his book to see Sirius holding his wand in the air, smirking. Remus frowned, looking from Sirius' face, to the wand, then back to Sirius again. His eyes widened suddenly, his eyebrows shooting up, as Sirius' smirk turned into a flat-out grin.
"...Sirius?" Remus asked timidly. James Potter and Peter Pettigrew turned their attention to the two boys. Sirius said nothing.
"Sirius? ...Friend? W-what's that for?"
The boy's black eyes glittered as he sat motionless, causing Remus to shift uneasily in his seat.
"Why are you looking at me like that?" Remus pleaded desperately.
With a start, Sirius suddenly leapt up and thrust the wand towards his friend. Remus yelped and bolted out of his chair. Sirius followed him in quick pursuit.
James and Peter watched with amused interest as Sirius chased Remus around the Common Room, ties flapping wildly, thrusting his wand repeatedly after him.
"Leave me alone!" Remus squealed. "I don't want your wand anywhere near me!"
Sirius, on his part, yelled with mock despair and obvious glee, "Come back! Come back, Remus darling! I'll be gentle!"
James and Peter looked at each other and rolled their eyes before turning their attention back to their work.
