Shinobi Lullaby
by FilkAeris
(to the tune of Sweet Baby James by James Taylor)
*
Slow, sad, and somewhat depressing, this filk came sighing out in about forty-five minutes, including touchups, while I was listening to a live James Taylor CD. How well do the parentless children of the shinobi villages sleep, with no one to comfort them, even after their first kills? It's a lonely life...
(A shinobiko is a child ninja. It might actually be directly transcribed as shinobigo; I'm not sure.)
*
There is a young ninja who lives all alone
And his kind-hearted sensei is his only companion
He wanders the forests and graffitis the canyons
Just a-waitin' for someday his fortunes to change
And as the sun's setting he sits on his rooftop
Just a-thinkin' 'bout ramen and faraway dreams
And closing his eyes he begins to imagine
And his hopes shine like prisms and silver starbeams
But they're farther away than they seem
So goodnight all you lonely orphans
And rockabye shinobiko
A child of the sky, you know someday you'll die
And you're living like fire till you go
Oh rockabye shinobiko
Now a cold bridge in winter is covered in snow
Yes, and so is a boy with his eyes sweet and bleeding
He crawled and he struggled, now he's quietly feeding
On the cool understanding in the hand holding his, you know...
There's a song that they sing when they take up the kunai
A song that they sing when they kill for their keep
A song that they sing when it's dark and they're tired
And they have to escape it, just to get them some sleep
For they're children still, somewhere down deep
So goodnight all you lonely orphans
And rockabye shinobiko
You're leaving behind all the fear in your mind
For a sleep that's as deep as they go
Oh, rockabye sweet shinobiko
