"I'm sorry Lana, it's just…" His throat is growing tight but he continues anyway. "He's never done anything like this before."
And he's scared. So scared. Scared he could lose him; scared that his parents will both realize what he's always known.
That all of this is his fault.
Her hand is warm on his shoulder and he wants to sink into those angelic eyes of hers.
"Hey, you know what?" Her voice is soft as she turns him to face her, "It's going to be okay." Soft fingers wrap around his and he can't help but smile.
"I didn't mean to unload on you like that." He's embarrassed to have told her this much, but more so because he can feel tears threatening to break lose.
"No. You… you never have to apologize for opening up to me."
The sincerity in her eyes is what breaks him. He feels the tears welling up and fights as hard as he can.
But like everything in his life has been doing lately, he loses control. One slides down his cheek and he doesn't know what to do.
He can't let her see him cry. He can't let go of her hands. He can't breathe.
He buries his face in her hair and a strangled sob shakes them both.
Lana does what he cannot and pulls him close. If she's surprised or afraid by his tears she doesn't show it. She strokes his hair and tells him everything will be okay. She kisses his forehead and reassures him she's always here.
And all he can do is cling to her and sob. For his father; for his family that's slowly breaking. For hurting the angel who's holding him so tenderly for everything he's held back for who knows how long.
And she never pulls away.
