Jack and Daniel always bicker.
Usually it's just a way to pass the time. Sometimes, after a strenuous mission, it's just a way to reaffirm their friendship. But sometimes, it's real, honest to god, fighting.
Hey, they're both pretty dominant guys; although, when it comes to Daniel, Jack will almost always give in, which, makes him very much the beta in their relationship.
But that doesn't mean that Jack will ALWAYS give in. No, he'll defend a position to the death if he has to, and he has. Several times.
So, they argue because:
A) They're bored. They are both energetic people, and are never comfortable unless they're doing something, whether it's twirling pencils, chin tapping, or just staring at the wall, trying not to lose it.
B) They want to make sure that the other still cares. It might sound ridiculous, but it's the truth. Hey, remember the Gadmeer? Exactly.
That way, which ever one breaks the ice, will be able to judge the other's condition, and act accordingly.
C) The REAL fighting. This is when they go head-to-head, and most of the time you don't know who will win, or if they'll even come out in one piece. Again, the Gadmeer.
Mostly it's Jack's fault for being so overprotective, but Daniel can't dodge the responsibility when it's his fault. Not that he tries, no, no, no...
And yet, beneath all that bickering -- even the serious fights -- there's a strange undercurrent there.
Everybody notices it; General Hammond, Doctor Frasier, even Maybourne and Kinsey.
There's that weird feeling that the two men are talking to each other on a level that even they might not understand.
Or maybe they do; it's hard to tell with that duo, since they're both so naturally secretive.
Jack, with that aura of, "Ask the wrong question, and die," and Daniel with that strange ability to just fade into the background.
They certainly do know what they're saying to each other, and they aren't the only ones. Sam and Teal'C sure as hell know, the rest of the base is certain, but they're keeping to their mouths shut (probably because Colonel O'Neill made them swear on pain of death).
Well, whatever it is Jack
and Daniel keep on saying to each other; it seems to keep them going through
the day.
General Hammond is perfectly content with letting it go at that; he has too much to do, and too much to worry about to bother about their private lives. Because they are just that; private and not open to anybody else's scrutiny. He keeps his curiosity under tight control, or else Jack will probably lynch him if he doesn't.
Doctor Frasier doesn't care; if that undercurrent of theirs means anything, then she will be told what they want her to know, which, at this point is currently nothing. She expects to get something out of one of them soon, but she knows not to rush them; otherwise, they won't tell her anything, and all the patience will have been for nothing.
Maybourne and Kinsey on the other hand, would like to now. Oh, yes, they are completely convinced that the undercurrent is perfect blackmail material. But there is no way in the seven hells that they are finding out. And if they do, then Heaven help them, because if Jack doesn't get to them first, and the rest of the SGC will.
Anyway, nobody knows what that undercurrent of theirs means; it's just another idiosyncrasy that are part of Jack and Daniel's incredible friendship.
And if Jack's eyes seem to be the softest they will ever be, and if Daniel's eyes seem to be the warmest they ever will be, and if they give each other a LOOK...well, no ones about to say anything.
