Volume I
Prologue
The emerald light took him by surprise.
It was not the cold green of a killing curse or the warm green of their mother's eyes. Its hue was faint, barely visible at first, but in a matter of seconds it grew big and bright enough to capture his attention. He'd seen its colour and felt its presence only once, only when he witnessed his older sister's death as a child.
Only when he lost Amara in his second life.
If she had been born again, in the same world he lived in, a third time—
Alex Potter wasn't selfish. Alex Potter's kind and gentle nature, alongside his preference to forgive and forget, was the result of a childhood in a household full of loving and caring people. Amara was unlucky in that regard; hated and scorned by their aunt and her family, no wonder she was the crueler one of the Potter triplets and more prone to kill those that dared to go after them with harmful intentions.
He had never liked that side of hers in his first life, barely tolerated it.
But he was not Alex Potter anymore.
And Kobayashi Nao was no fool.
If she had been born again, in the same world he lived in, a third time—
He would not let her die. He would find her and keep her alive, no matter what or who stood in his way, just like his sister had done the same for him in their first life. Selfishness ran through their blood, after all, and now it seemed it was his turn to go against the world.
It wouldn't be easy, that much he knew, but giving up was not an option. She hadn't given up despite the words and spells hurled at her, so why should he?
The sound of hurried footsteps brought him back to reality, and he frowned even as he turned around to see who thought making noise at three in the morning inside a hospital was a good idea. Sure enough, those two were already sprinting in his direction.
"No running in the halls," he said sharply.
The teenager boy — blonde hair, blue eyes; bright sun and clear sky, summer personified Amara would have called him — slid to a halt while carrying something wrapped in a blanket and tripped on his own feet. He would have fallen face first if it wasn't for the girl behind him — auburn hair and green eyes; the transition every tree leaf went through, autumn — grabbing the back of his clothes. Even as the kid apologised to him with a grimace, Nao's stare was solely focused on the bundle that rested in the teen's arms.
Faint emerald light, small enough to be barely visible; he had only noticed because his thoughts were on his sister and the sudden bright green aura, but now—
"Please, save her!"
How many times had he heard that sentence directed at him? Yet—
"Alright"
— now it was in front of him, and she was alive.
"Follow me"
— yet he still tried and failed sometimes, doing what his sister believed to be the right thing.
If there's no difference between life and death, she had told him before dying, then always choose the first option. She had told him to live despite her death, he had listened and did as she said; now that he had her back in his life, he would not let her go so easily again.
Sorry, Amara, but death is worse than life.
Summary: 'The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord approaches... born to those who have thrice defied him, born as the seventh month dies...' — With barely one third of the prophecy known by both sides, mistakes were made. Of the four babies born as July ended, only one was marked and proclaimed as the Child-Who-Lived in October of 1981 – but that didn't mean it was exactly that what happened. Everyone may think that it was Alex Potter the one that vanquished Voldemort, yet Amara knew better.
In a world where nothing of that held importance, the wrong chosen child and his strange sister were born together and torn apart again in a seemingly endless cycle. Light can turn into darkness, just like despair can turn into hope. Being in opposite sides could change a lot of people, but neither of them was going to betray the other — that's what they thought, until Melancholy pulled him away from her and Sloth kept her from reaching for him.
