But He Couldn't Hear It
Author's note: Thank you all so much for your reviews! If I didn't have any support, I would never finish anything. You guys are the greatest!
*winks cheezily*
Seto poured the steaming tea into two cups. Yugi had called only moments before to let him know Joey would be coming a little after one.
It was 12:54 when Seto heard a loud knocking on his front door.
He opened it to find his mutt standing there, about to ring the bell. He smiled awkwardly as Seto glared at him, then smirked.
Hello, Mutt
Joey frowned.
I could turn back any minute, you know
Seto only rolled his eyes and stepped out of the way to let Joey in.
There were two steaming cups of tea on the coffee table in front of the living area sofa. A plate of home-made molasses cookies were there as well.
The older boy knew food would occupy his puppy's hands, and he needed his hands occupied so he'd be forced to use his mouth.
When they were seated on the sofa, Joey eyed the cookies hungrily.
"Go ahead, Mutt."
Joey didn't move. Seto had forgotten he couldn't hear for a moment.
Sighing, he began to sign.
That's what they're there for, go ahead and pig out.
Joey's eyes lit up as he grabbed two and stuffed them in his mouth.
Thank you, Seto!
Do you have to eat two at once?
Maybe.
Gross.
Oh, Shut up.
Seto couldn't help but smile.
He had Joey in his house, the first part of his plan.
Hey, Mutt, when are you going to start talking?
I'm not a mutt, Kaiba, and I can't talk.
Sure you can, if you try.
No, I can't.
Why not?
I can't hear myself.
So?
Joey leaned back and stared up at the ceiling.
You don't know how much my life has changed in the last two years, Kaiba.
What do you mean?
Joey stared at his hands a moment before signing again.
I mean I never knew that taking sign language for years would actually come in handy. I never knew that I'd really go deaf. I never knew I'd never be able to hear anyone's voice ever again or listen to music.
His signing was frustrated and frantic now, and it was hard for Seto to keep up.
I never knew I'd have to use my hands to communicate. I never knew any of it, but suddenly I wake up in the middle of the night with a horrible headache and suddenly I can't hear myself complain.
Seto gave him a truly sincere look. He had never thought of how Joey had felt when deafness first struck him.
I never knew any of it, Kaiba. Believe me, if I could speak, I would.
You can.
No, I can't! I can't hear myself! I wouldn't know if I was making sense anymore!
He looked like he might cry.
Seto handed him his cup of tea.
Joey took a small sip of it, then he threw his hands up; not in any formal sign, but just in the universal sign of helplessness.
He stood up, and wiped his eyes.
Seto felt awful. He hadn't meant to make Joey feel miserable.
"I'm sorry I made you feel bad, " he said, but Joey wasn't looking at him, and he couldn't hear it.
To be continued…
