Chapter 4: Voices

Joey, what's wrong? Tea signed at dinner.
On Saturdays, the gang went out to eat together.
Joey squeezed another lemon wedge into his water. He didn't want his friends to know what Seto had done to him. He didn't want his friends to know that he felt odd about signing. It was all Seto's fault!
Joey?
He looked up.
His friends stared back at him, worried.
It's nothing. Really, guys. It's nothing.
Yugi, Yami, Tristan, and Tea began to speak to one another.
Joey looked down at his glass awkwardly.
He didn't want them speaking to each other. If he couldn't speak, why should they? They could at least do it privately.
Tea tapped him on the shoulder. Joey looked at her.
What'd Seto want you for? She signed.
Joey didn't know how to answer.
What was he supposed to say?
"Oh, he just wanted to insult me, " or, "No reason, just to rub it in my face that I can't talk."
Tea tapped him again, then, as quick as she could speak, her hands were in his face again.
C'mon, tell me.
He finally looked at her.
His signing was so quick she could barely understand it.
He wanted to tell me I needed to talk, okay?!
Yugi frowned.
"Why would he do that?" He asked Tea.
The purple haired girl shrugged.
"I dunno," she replied, "why would he care whether Joey talked or not?"
Tristan scratched his head.
"I mean, I know we wish he could communicate verbally and all, but Kaiba?"
Yami looked at Joey.
Why did he say that?
Joey shrugged.
Why did Seto want him to speak? It didn't make any sense?
His friends began to talking to each other again.
He felt left out and somehow erased from the group.
Oh, how he longed to talk to them. To make funny voices and laugh.
When they had slumber parties or pool parties, Joey always either had to ignore conversations because they were in the dark and couldn't see him, or they were on the far side of the pool.
When they hung out at Yugi's game shop, he had to repeatedly tap them on the shoulder.
Well, just ignore him, Joey, Tea signed, Seto's always been kind of nuts.
