Chapter 5: Not Handicapped
Author's note: Okay, fifth chapter. I love you guys so much! I've gotten such great reviews, and if it weren't for those, I just would have gone, "Finish? Ohh, so difficult." But I didn't! And it's all thanks to you! ^-^
Confused, Seto, Why, How, Speak...
Joey tossed and turned under his blankets that night as he signed against his mattress.
Don't know, Deaf, Left out, Voices...
Why did Seto want him to speak? Why did he care whether Joey spoke or not?
I hate him, why can't he leave me alone...
His friends acted as if he were handicapped, even Yugi, who had always believed in him.

Flashback:
"Joey, be careful! There's thin ice over there!" Tea called, gliding to a perfect stop on her blades.
Yugi rolled his eyes.
"Joey, get over here!"
Tristan, who was having just as hard of a time as Joey on ice skates, fell to the ice with a thud.
"Let's quit, Joey, we'll leave the graceful skaters to this." He said, thrusting his thumb in Tea and Yugi's direction.
Joey nodded, then waved his arms frantically as he tried to move.
"This is hard, you g-guh-guys!"
A mob of younger children sped by him, knocking him backwards...onto the thin ice.
It cracked beneath him.
"Joey!" His friends screamed racing towards him.
He awoke in the hospital.
His head throbbed painfully, and his whole body felt stiff.
"Joey, are you okay?"
His friends were over him, but their voices sounded distant.
"I'm fine." He replied.
Tea, sobbing harshly, threw herself on top of him. Tristan and Yugi awkwardly tried to pry her off.
Exactly two days later, in his own bed, Joey woke up.
His head throbbed painfully again. There might as well have been a miniature marching band pounding on it.
He sat up.
"Ugh, my head."
He grew silent. He had felt the words, but he did not hear them.
"What the?!"
The words! He could not hear them!
He leaned over to his nightstand table, his hands shaking, and pounded on it. There was no sound.
"Dad! Dad!"
(Note: In my world-er, I mean, stories...Joey's father is not a greasy drunk)
"Joey," his father said, coming into his room, "son, are you okay?"
Joey looked at him. He saw his father's lips moving. He saw them perfectly.
"Dad," he said quietly, tears welling in his eyes, "I can't hear you.":
End Flashback

Scared, Alone, Left out...
He had to see Seto again. Afterall, he was the only one who hadn't seen Joey as a handicapped.
When he had first gone deaf, his friends wrote everything down as they learned sign.
They began to treat Joey differently as well.
It was if Joey was mentally challenged or memory lapsed.
When they spoke to one another verbally, they'd give Joey awkward glances, as if they shouldn't be speaking around him. They never rented movies without subtitles, even when it was all action.
Need, hurt, miss...
He finally fell into a slow, fitful sleep.
The next morning, he got dressed and went to Seto's house.
Seto was currently working on his computer, beating norns for acting so ignorant, when he heard a loud rapping on his door.
Confused, afterall, he had not been expecting company, he opened it.
An awkward blonde puppy stood there, eyes darting everywhere.
"What do you-"
What do you want, Mutt?
Joey looked around, then back at Seto.
I wanted to see you again. Something told me to.
Seto grew a gigantic smark on his face.
Was it your brain?
Joey frowned.
Very funny.
Seto nodded.
Yah, I'm a real riot. Everybody laugh at Seto's funny joke. HA. HA.HA.
Joey smiled, a real smile.
You're ridiculous.
Seto had never actually shared a humorous moment with his puppy. As far as he was concerned, there should have been a greeting card to commerate it.
He looked at Joey.
