Chapter 7: No one expects much out of an invalid
Author's Note: Okay, the last chappie was pretty cliff hangery , so here's the next one.
Was he really going to go to Seto's right away? The older boy was probably upset with him. Joey frowned as he thought of what might happen if he went back. Seto might pound the crap out of him, or speak something horrible again. Joey hadn't heard him earlier, but facial expression was universal.
He decided to go to Tea's. They hadn't been the closest of friends before Joey's accident, but Tea was the fastest signer, and that brought them a lot closer.
She was at home, singing in front of the mirror. Joey stood in her doorway and watched her, grinning.
The purple haired girl was holding her hairbrush, really belting it out. She turned and twirled, skipping and dancing.
Joey clapped. She turned around, very startled.
Bravo, Bravo, he signed.
Tea frowned. Her hands immediately flew up in an annoyed rage.
How long have you been standing there? And don't you know it's rude to spy on people? Oh, Joey Wheeler, you are just the worst!
Joey smiled and rubbed his chin with his two index fingers, then he smiled at her and began to clap again. He placed his fingers and his mouth and whistled.
Joey!
The blonde smiled and held up his hands in apology, then his face changed to a serious, worried frown.
Tea, I need to talk to you.
Tea sat on her bed, brushing her hair.
Okay, about what?
Joey sighed awkwardly and felt himself blushing.
Se-Kaiba.
Tea's eyes widened with confusion.
Kaiba? Why? Did he do something to you, Joey?
She sighed angrily and fell backwards onto her bed. She was no longer facing Joey. Another disadvantage of deafness. Unless people were looking at you, you couldn't get through to them.
Frustrated at everything about people of hearing, he tapped her on her drawn up leg.
Tea, he, Joey hesitated, blushing heavily, he kissed me…
Tea jumped to her feet. Her hands were quickly in her friend's face.
He kissed you?! As in lips to lips?!
Joey nodded.
Tea began pacing around her room. Her mouth was moving, but Joey had no idea what she was saying.
When? Where? Joey, tell me!
Joey backed against her wall. Her hands were practically touching his face.
Today, at his house…
You were there again? Why?
Joey clasped Tea's hands and patted them firmly against her chest. It was a mean, usually frustrated sign for, "Shut Up".
Tea pulled away and stared at Joey as if he'd just slapped her across the face.
You're in love with him, aren't you?
Joey bit his bottom lip and nodded. His eyes were clouding with tears.
"Joey…"
Tea began to cry and threw her arms around him. She pulled him closer.
She began to speak, although she knew Joey couldn't hear.
"It'll be okay, Kiddo."
"Seto's just toying with him," Tea thought, "he's such a loser, and to think I was starting to miss him."
Joey finally pulled away and looked at her.
I kissed him back, though. The thing is…he's demanding I speak.
Tea frowned.
Why? Doesn't he know you're deaf?
Joey nodded.
Some deaf people can speak, though.
Tea frowned harder.
But most can't. It's okay, Joey, really it is. You're just confused. Don't let Seto get to you.
She smiled.
C'mon, Yugi and the rest of us are going to out to eat. Italian.
She signed , "yummy" and then hand spelled, "Joey"
Joey smiled.
Yah, I'll go
Tea hugged him.
That's my boy!
