Chapter One: Ember's debut
Note: Hi everyone - Teen Titans Trouble Returns has returned - there will be two versions of this story this one will be the original version and the other one will be the newer version same plot line but the other one may be longer, enjoy!
It was about five in the afternoon, as Cyborg walked along the lonely streets in Jump City, a cool breeze swept through now and then. He sighed as he glanced around to ensure that there was no trouble, so far there wasn't. Which made him feel rather bored, he let out a sigh. 'Man, it's so boring being on patrol when nothing exciting going to happen. I hope Star and Robin are having fun on their date!' He thought, as he looked around to make sure everything seemed fine, couples walked past with their hands in each other's or their arms around one another, making Cyborg feel somewhat lonely.
It wasn't long before something caught his attention - the smell of fire and a woman screaming. 'Finally, some action' he thought as he ran to the direction to the fire which wasn't too far from where he was. It appeared to be a two-story wooden white house which caught alight, the house once had a beautiful flower garden which was now on fire. He noticed some firefighters already attending the scene and a rather plump looking woman who was wearing a yellow dress with red flowers on it and no shoes yelling at her daughter while holding another child in her arms.
"But mum!" the daughter she was yelling at exclaimed. Cyborg listened in wondering if he could help. He watched on to see if everything was okay.
The girl was about sixteen and had long red hair and hazel green eyes. Her hair was up in a ponytail, she was dressed in a pair of black trousers which had flames come from the hems, Cyborg couldn't tell what colour her shirt was due to the light, but it appeared to be the same colour too, he noticed she wore a pair of gloves.
"No butts, Ember! I've had it with you and your so-called fire powers, I want you to get out and stay out!" the girl's mother exclaimed.
Cyborg watched on wondering if the mother was joking. 'Surely, she doesn't mean that she's booting her daughter out of her home?' he thought.
"Mum! You told me to take my gloves off and touch the table to see if I was telling the truth and well, that's what happened, whenever I don't wear my gloves, everything I touch, burns" Ember explained to her. "It's a power I have, and I can't control it."
"Fibber. You probably had a lighter with you and that you're going through some weird teenage phase your friends probably taught you at school" the mother snapped. In her arms was a crying child, who she put down for a while. "As I said earlier Ember, because of your actions we are now homeless once again and we have to wait until our house gets rebuilt. I've had enough of your so-called powers and your attitude. I don't want to ever see you again, now get out of my sight and don't come crawling back to me" the mother yelled at her.
Cyborg wondered if he should intervene, but he realized how angry the mother and decided it was best not to incase she threw something at him.
"Surely you're not serious! Are you really kicking me out of home because of my powers? Like I said many times before I can't control them" Ember said with fear in her voice.
"Yes Ember, like I said many times before, you are a danger to this family because of your obsession with lighting things on fire. Tell me a good reason why I shouldn't get the police to come and arrest you. In fact, get out of my sight right now before I call the cops" the angry mother snapped. "Get out and stay out! I don't care what happens to you, I don't want another home to go up in flames because of you. I'm tired of moving and I'm tired of you" she added.
Ember looked at her mother unsure if she was telling the truth that she wanted her daughter out - after all, it could be a spur of a moment threat. Her answer came to her once her mother grabbed the phone out and threatened to call the police once again, gulping, Ember took one last look at her house. It was a beautiful two story white wooden home with a once beautiful flower garden out the front - all of it had been destroyed and Ember herself was devastated. She tried saying sorry to her mother while they were inside, but that wasn't enough to cover the damage for both the relationship with her family and her home. Ember felt tears coming from her eyes as she tried fighting them back. "But..."
"GET OUT! GET OUT! GET OUT and LEAVE US ALONE!" Ember's mother yelled out at her once more. Cyborg watched on in dismay as he watched Ember do as her mother say. Without any clothes aside from the ones she was wearing or money, Ember took one last look at her home and ran off, crying unaware that Cyborg had been watching.
'Stupid powers, I wish I didn't have them' Ember thought as she ran hard as she could, away from her mother and former family home. She cried as she ran, devastated after realizing what happened.
'It was because mother told me to take my gloves off, when I insisted I couldn't, not even for a moment' she thought.
'That poor girl... She does seem have issues with her powers... but if she were a Titan maybe we could help her control them! I just hope she won't end up like Terra...' Cyborg thought, watching as the mother shoved Ember to the ground. Cyborg heard the girl 'oof' in surprise when she was pushed onto the ground.
"I'm telling you right now, to get lost Ember, scram, go elsewhere! Go find someone who actually cares about your stupid imaginary powers..." The mother yelled even louder, almost loud enough for the entire city to hear. She raised her hand and went to slap Ember but stopped herself after hearing her young daughter crying in her arms, she cuddled her daughter and kissed her cheek. Cyborg wanted to intervene, but he didn't want to be involved with the fight between a mother and daughter. He wasn't sure how the mother would react if he suddenly appeared out of nowhere to prevent them from fighting.
"Fine, but I'm telling you one thing mother, I will never do anything for you again! I'll try and find a way to control my powers, but I won't find a way to forgive you. I thought all mothers were meant to help their child, but you seem to love Amy more than me... Good riddance mother, I hate you!" Ember blasted back, revealing the little girl's name. She got up from the ground and ran off, without looking back she ran into Cyborg, accidentally pushing him to the ground.
In the shadows, a mysterious figure watched on in interest. 'Don't get too hopeful, Cyborg. I saw her first' the figure thought. 'Though, now I need to find a way to capture her!'
Earlier...
Ember sat on a chair at the kitchen table at her home with her mother and younger siblings. In the dining room was a large brown wooden table, six chairs around each end of the table, a vase with roses on the table and a picture of the family on the wall. Her mother wanted to talk to Ember about a report card at school, while her grades were good, she kept getting complaints about wearing gloves which wasn't a part of the uniform.
"Ember, I had a talk to your teacher Mr. Knightswood, and he said that you keep wearing your gloves all the time. He said you'd be a better student if you removed them. He informed me he has asked you to remove them however, you retaliate and tell him you can't because you'd set things on fire... Now Ember, I'm not a fan of lairs and I agree with him. Gloves are dirty and whatever reason you're wearing yours 24/7 for needs to stop. Its ridicules. Understandable in the wintertime but in summer c'mon Ember, you can do better than that. Remove them now, please" her mother said.
"But mum, it's true. I could set things on fire if I remove them - believe me I would remove them in a heartbeat if I didn't have such powers" Ember said.
"You have a big imagination, Ember. You've been watching the Teen Titans on the news way too much. You don't have powers; you just think you do. You're just a normal teen who for some reason has a big obsession with gloves. Can't be good for your hygiene too, Ember."
Ember blushed at the mention of Teen Titans - she loved her local heroes and the things they did for the city. While she never had the chance to meet them, she knew who they were and what they looked like. "You have no idea how hard it is to remove these gloves, mum. I can't do it... I can only remove them while I'm in the bathroom because I'm near water or swimming. If I'm washing my hands, I can temporarily take them off, but they go back on straight away, I don't have to dry them because they dry fast."
"Ember... I don't want your siblings growing up thinking it's okay to wear gloves all the time. It's just wrong. Just take them off, it's all I ask for" her mother pleaded.
Ember bit her bottom lip and hesitated. The last time she did that she set something on fire and got busted for it. She let out a sigh. "It's a bad idea, mum"
"Let me look at your hands then, with them off," Ember's mother asked.
"No, I can't... it's too risky" Ember warning her.
"You have a count of three to remove them or I'll take everything away from you. I won't let you see the Titans when they are on the news either" her mother threatened - getting angry at her daughter.
Ember looked anxiously at her mother then back at her gloves.
"One..."
Ember looked around and began feeling scared.
"Two..."
Ember hesitated again for a moment as she looked for another excuse to get out from doing just that.
"Two and a half..."
Terrified about not being able to get the things she wanted, Ember removed one glove and held it in her hand that was wearing a glove.
"See, Ember. You don't have powers, nothing happened... WHA?!" Ember's mother exclaimed in fear when she saw her hand turn red and had a ball of flame in it.
"You see, mum? This is why I can't take it off. Otherwise, this happens" Ember explained as she went to put her glove back on, however, her mother grabbed the glove and shoved it in her pocket.
"Stop being silly, Ember. That's just a lighter you have up your sleeve. The other one thanks"
Ember panicked as she took the other glove off, the hand did the same thing as her first one did.
"Very funny, Ember. Now if you please stop wearing these stupid things" Ember's mother said snatching the glove from her, she shoved it in her own pocket too.
Ember's hands began to burn from the heat with her powers - she at once knew what that meant and began panicking. "Mum, I'm losing control of my powers, get out quick!" she exclaimed. Her mother thought she was fibbing and laughed.
"Funny magic trick, Ember. Its fake"
Moments later, a flame leap on the table and set that alight, Ember's mother at once quickly rushed to get her kids, pets and a few belongings out before things worsened, she herself got out with Ember. Moments later, the house they were once in was on fire.
Enraged by her daughters' actions, the mother constantly yelled at Ember...
Ember reflected back on the events that caused the disaster as she ran without looking. Moments later, she walked into something hard: THUD!
Looking up for a moment the teen saw a familiar face. "Cyborg?" She asked in confusion.
"Hey are you okay? I heard the commotion down there and wanted to see if you needed assistance" he asked.
Ember looked at him in relief and cried some more. "Did you hear any of it?"
"Yeah, I'm sorry that happened... What kind of powers do you have?"
"Earth and fire. My mum got sick of me pretending they were excuses for wearing gloves"
"I'm sorry that happened. Your powers sound cool, what can your fire and earth powers do?"
Ember looked at Cyborg and knew she could trust him - after all, he was a local hero. She told him about her powers and what had happened. "Now I have no-where else to go" she said in the finish with a sigh. "And I have to get a new set of gloves since my mum took them from me."
'Hm, wonder if the team would let her stay with us. She's been through a lot. I'll ask Robin, but first, I'll see if I can help her find new gloves' Cyborg thought. "I think I can help you with that. Can you go without gloves for a bit, or do you urgently need them?" Cyborg asked.
Ember looked at her hands which both had flames coming from them - though they weren't painful to her, they made her worry. "I think I need them - I'm worried about setting more things on fire - my old teacher gave me the gloves my mum took after understanding my powers" Ember said looking concerned. "If I touch something now - it would catch alight, just like that" she explained.
"We'll find that store which sells your gloves in the meantime, have you had anything to eat?" Cyborg asked. Just as he spoke, Ember's stomach rumbled - she blushed lightly from embarrassment.
"No, I didn't have the chance to eat after school today" Ember replied. "And thank you, Cyborg. I just realized I didn't introduce myself yet - I'm Ember, it's nice to meet you - I've always been a big fan of yours, Cyborg" she said.
"Nice to meet you too, Ember. Aw thank you! Would you like to go for a pizza with me after we get you a new pair of gloves to help your hands? I'll give Robin a call and tell him the situation and ask him if you can stay with us" Cyborg said smiling to Ember who looked at him in delight.
"Thank you and yes please, Cyborg! Would he really let me stay? That'd be a dream being a Teen Titan but what about my powers?" Ember asked in concern - she wasn't too sure if she could control them as she had no practice yet.
"We'll help you train your powers and get them under control - as to him letting us stay - I'm sure he'd be fine with it" Cyborg answered smiling to the teen. The two walked down the path to find the store that has the gloves which Ember needs to protect her hands - the sun started setting and the streetlights flickered to turn on - some streetlights failed to light up while others were fine.
It took a while to get to the store - Cyborg and Ember talked most of the time getting to know one another.
'While it's true, I may never get to see my family again because of my mum's words - I'm relieved I get a second chance as a possible Titan' Ember thought as they got closer to the store. 'I will miss them but it's the way things are and something I have to accept.'
"Well, here we are" Cyborg said - opening the door to the store for Ember to walk in - knowing at the moment she wasn't able to touch anything. Ember thanked him and walked inside, with Cyborg following afterwards.
The store was rather big and had mainly clothing racks - full of different types of clothes for super-heroes. Ember was in awe at the place. "Wow, this is so cool!" she exclaimed. "Never knew this place existed" she added in excitement, wanting to touch everything but knew she couldn't as her hands were still on fire.
At one end of a shop was a till and an older male wearing a Superman outfit at the till - he wasn't Superman of course just a fan. He left his spot at the till and walked over to Ember and Cyborg. "Hi - how may I help you both?" he asked.
Cyborg looked at the man who was wearing a name tag that said 'Jason'. "Hi Jason, this is my friend, Ember and she's after a pair of gloves, you see, she's got fire-powers and while she's not wearing them - flames are seen on her hands" Cyborg explained, Ember showed Jason her hands.
"Ouch! That looks painful" Jason commented. "Shouldn't you go to the hospital about that?"
"I can't - since these are a part of my powers! Do you have anything that could help them?" Ember asked in concern and described what her gloves like before.
Jason thought for a moment then clicked his fingers together. "I think I have the pair of gloves that can help you - are you picky over colours?" he asked.
"No - how come?" Ember said.
"The only ones we have left are black, red and pink - they sell out fast" Jason answered taking her and Cyborg to the shelf that sold them.
"May I please have the black pair?" Ember asked in delight. "They certainly are good gloves - they're the only ones I can wear that work for my powers and allow me to touch stuff while I'm wearing them."
Jason smiled and got the pair out for him - he told them the cost which wasn't cheap - Cyborg paid for them as Ember didn't have money on her at the stage. She planned to get work so she could return the money to him.
"Thank you both so much!" Ember exclaimed as she put her gloves on - at once they helped settle the flames which now are un-noticed
"Are you able to touch things now without setting it alight?" Jason asked in concern.
"I think so" Ember said and touched the ground near her foot - nothing happened much to her delight. "Yes, it's perfect! I certainly will find a way to return your kindness, Cyborg!" she said smiling to him.
Cyborg smiled to her. "You're welcome - and no problem glad I could help out. Now how's about a bite to eat? Then I'll give Robin a call and explain the situation" he said.
Ember nodded - the two thanked Jason once more and left the store. "Now to the T-car to get some pizza and finally call Robin" he said. Ember was looking forward to going in the T-Car. She had seen it on news reports and always imagined being inside it. The two began talking about how they'll work on planning to control Ember's powers.
Sitting on the roof of Titans Tower, was Raven who had been trying to meditate while watching the sunset, but that wasn't going according to plan with a certain green teenager bothering her. He smiled as he tried tickling her on the sides, Raven's eye twitched when he did that. The two had recently became close friends after they got back from Tokyo and have become inseparable. Raven couldn't be without him, and Beast Boy couldn't be seen without her. The way they acted some would think they were already a couple even though they weren't yet.
"Beast Boy, I am trying to meditate!" Raven hinted, as he crept behind her and put his fingers on her sides, wiggling them up and down. He attempted to tickle her, Raven looked at him with annoyance.
"Aw c'mon Raven, I know you're ticklish!" Beast Boy teased, "You're so cute, when you're annoyed, Rae!" an idea struck the green teen's mind. He turned into a mouse and started climbing up Raven's back, attempting to tickle her once more, Raven blushed when he called her cute. Beast Boy crawled all over Raven, as an attempt to make her laugh.
"Like I said, B, I'm not ticklish and it's Raven" Raven hinted, as she folded her arms. She gave up with trying to meditate and turned her attention to Beast Boy. Beast Boy grinned then turned back to his human form and put his arms around her, her old self would've pushed him away however, she shrugged and watched the sunset with him.
"I bet I can make you smile, Mama!" Beast Boy said teasingly. Hiding a blush, Raven tried looking away. While it's true both Titans liked one another, they hid their feelings in fear of the other rejecting them though Beast Boy would often enjoy flirting with her. Which she secretly enjoyed.
"I'm not your Mama, Beast Boy"
'Hm... I wonder if now is a good time to tell her my feelings?' Beast Boy thought. He remembered telling Cyborg, Robin and Starfire about his feelings for her a while ago and the three were very supportive for him. He grinned remembering when Starfire said that the four should go on the double of the date together if they became a couple.
"Raven I..." Beast Boy started to say until he and Raven noticed the T-Car return to the Titans Tower. Ever since the two came close, he couldn't get her off his mind and thought this was the right opportunity to tell her how he felt.
"Strange, I thought Cy's patrol finished at nine" Raven said curious to know why he returned home early. "Let's go," she said, then started levitating her way back to the main room with Beast Boy following her.
'Stupid! You had the chance to ask her out and you blew it!' Beast Boy scolded himself mentally as he followed Raven to the main room, when they got there, they noticed Cyborg with a new person that neither of them has met before.
"Who is she?" Raven asked, as she put her hood on and looked at Ember, she then looked at Cyborg and waited for an answer. Cyborg was about to open his mouth to tell her, when he heard Starfire's voice floating through the room. He smiled and turned his attention over to the main room's door. "I'll tell you in a minute," he assured her.
"That was fun boyfriend, Robin! We should go there again sometime!" Starfire's happy voice sung out as she and Robin met up with Cyborg and the others once more. Starfire and Robin had their arms around one another and smiled.
"It was fun wasn't it, Star? I'm glad you enjoyed it," Robin smiled back to her. He and Starfire just got back from the carnival, it was Starfire's suggestion for them to go there on a date, and he was glad he got the chance to spend time alone with her.
"Guys, I want to introduce you all to a new friend I made today," Cyborg nodded to Ember who at once introduced herself and explained her situation. She felt nervous when she looked at Raven.
"Oh joy, we've got a new traitor. Don't even think about going to my room" Raven hissed at Ember, then folded her arms as she stood with Beast Boy. At once, Raven didn't trust her and thought she'd be another Terra.
"Rae that was mean!" Beast Boy whispered softly to her as he put his hand on her shoulder, causing her to blush.
"You know I find it hard to trust others after what Terra had done... and it's Raven" Raven whispered back to him, glaring at Ember.
Ember looked at Raven sadly then back at Cyborg. "Did I do something wrong?" Ember asked innocently, looking over at Cyborg feeling rather uncomfortable. She began to wish that she never came to the tower with him.
"Don't worry Ember. Raven's had some issues with trusting others in the past... Due to the former teammate we had. but I'm sure you'll fit in fine" Beast Boy smiled giving her thumbs up and a toothy smile.
"Ember, we'd like to try you out in the team. How would you like to join us for training tomorrow?" Robin asked, putting his hand out to shake hers, Ember shook Robin's hand and smiled to him.
"I'd love to train with you tomorrow. I can't control my powers yet, but I want to learn how to" Ember replied excitedly. "Where would I be staying for the time being?"
'Outside, in the cold,' Raven thought, referring to where Ember would be sleeping. She had a good mind to talk about Robin, about letting Ember on the team, Raven didn't trust her one bit.
"You can have my old room... Since I'm going to be moving into Raven's room!" Beast Boy announced playfully with his voice sounding serious, he placed an arm around Raven and nodded to her, wiggling his ears as he did. Raven gently removed his arm.
Starfire, Robin and Cyborg stared at Beast Boy in shock.
"It's about time you two got together!" Cyborg commented thinking that was the situation.
"We're not together!" Raven insisted, hiding a blush under her hood.
"At least, not yet" Beast Boy said.
"Normally, I'd be against him moving in my room... But since we don't really have a spare room as the traitor's is out of the question, it leaves me with no choice. Beast Boy, you can move in, as long as you don't touch any of my stuff, it's only a temporary solution" Raven answered.
"Really?" Beast Boy asked in excitement. He didn't expect her to allow him to move in with her - he was playing around but also was serious at the same time. "I know the rules, Mama!" he added knowing he shouldn't' be touching things like her mirror and other stuff.
"Don't call me that" Raven said. 'I'm not yours yet'
"You call her Mama now?" Robin stared at the green teen in surprise. "Things moved quickly! Are you sure you aren't dating?"
"If you call me that one more time, I'd send him to another dimension" Raven warned Beast Boy. "And yes, we're not dating."
Ember looked on in confusion wondering what was going on. Though she had seen the Titans on the news she figured they were close friends. She knew Starfire and Robin were dating as it was announced on the news after they returned from Tokyo.
"Well, if you're sure about that, Raven, we'll move Beast Boy's furniture in your room and start sorting Ember's room out" Robin announced pleased with the result.
Raven looked at Ember. "Since you're new, I wanted to warn you not to go to our room!" she said. By our room she meant hers and Beast Boy's. Ember nodded and kept that in mind.
The Titans except Ember helped move the furniture, Ember knew nobody was allowed in her room aside from her close friends so she stayed out and wished she could help. It took a few hours to sort out their room, but Beast Boy and Raven finally had things organized in their room.
"Are you sure it's alright for me to live in your room?" Beast Boy asked, as he made his bed. "Cause over a few years ago before Star n Robin got together, you'd probably would've told me to sleep on the sofa!"
Raven nodded and started to blush. "Actually, I'm going to lo..." She began, before the alarm started going off, much to her annoyance.
"TITANS! TROUBLE!" Raven and Beast Boy heard Robin's voice over the loudspeakers and made their way back to the main room.
"Boyfriend Robin, what will happen if another Titan other than our new friend Ember comes along?" Starfire asked after they had finished moving the furniture. She and Robin were now sitting in the Main Room on the couch with their arms around one another.
Robin thought for a moment. "That's actually a good question Star" he replied, wondering if he'd move into Starfire's room or if she'd move into his. "Maybe we could move in together?" he suggested. "I mean might as well since we spend a lot of time together in our rooms" he added.
Starfire hugged him. "That is a glorious idea, Robin. Whose room will we move into though, mine or yours?"
Robin thought for a moment. He remembered that her bed was really comfortable as was his. "That's a hard decision, I love both our rooms" he said. "What one would you choose?"
Starfire was about to answer, however, got interrupted by the alarm going off, indicating there was trouble.
Cyborg had been showing Ember around Titans Tower, telling her where she can and can't go due to certain reasons, the two discussed what her future bedroom would look like.
Raven, Beast Boy, Cyborg and Ember at once made their way to the Main Room.
"Who is the bad guy?" Ember asked curiously, eager to try out her powers.
"It's Megumi, I've never even heard of her until now. Apparently, she's broken into a bank and started turning customers into ice while a ghost kid steals money from the safe! The Ghost Kid appears to be her side kick so be careful they might be strong opponents, " Robin explained. "Titans Go!" He added after getting the location he ran out of the room; Starfire flew after him ready to defeat the new bad guys.
Raven, Beast Boy and Cyborg followed after; Ember looked at the others for a moment.
"Didn't you hear him? Let's go Ember!" Cyborg called out to her, Ember at once she nodded and ran with him.
To be continued...
