Once upon a time there was a fox and an elephant. The fox's name was Foxy and the elephant's name was Elphie. Nobody liked Elphie because she was so large and was covered in ugly gray skin. Besides, her ears were big and drooped down to her fat legs. Foxy, however, was lovely to look at. Her soft fur was golden red and glinted brilliantly when the sun shone down on it. Everyone loved Foxy but, as most foxes are, she was a trickster. She seemed very nice but in reality was not.

One day, Elphie decided she wanted to learn how to fly. She knew that if she had a special talent, like flying, the others would be impressed with her and then she'd be accepted. She had heard of a legendary crow who had a special magic flying feather and, intrigued, went in search of the bird. She found him in a random tree somewhere, his sleek black feathers shimmering like a coat of new paint. Elphie asked the esteemed crow to lend her his magic flying feather. The crow said no and flew away.

Elphie was discouraged but, as she turned to go home, Foxy trotted forward and insisted that her best friend not give up. Her vigor refreshed, Elphie waited until the next day when the crow returned to the tree. Again she asked him if she could have his special magic flying feather. The crow laughed in her face and took off again.

For a week, Elphie persisted and persisted and every day the crow would refuse and fly off. Finally, on the eighth day, the crow asked:

"Why is it you keep coming back? Don't you see I will not give you my feather?"

And Elphie answered:

"Well, old crow, I have been told that in order to fly, I must use your magic flying feather and I just HAVE to learn to fly! If I learn to fly, everyone will be so impressed, they will never make fun of me again."

The crow handed her a single black feather from under his wing.

"Here, try my feather," he said.

Overjoyed, Elphie took the feather in her mouth. She ran up a small cliff and, without hesitation, jumped off the edge. A second later she crashed to the ground.

"What happened?!" she cried, "Why didn't I fly?"

Foxy was laughing at her.

"You don't need a feather to fly," the crow told her, "my feathers are not magical. They help me fly because I am a bird and birds are supposed to fly. Elephants are not."

"But elephants are not supposed to have huge ears, either!" Elphie wailed.

"So maybe the two negatives will create a positive."

Foxy stopped laughing and considered this thought.

"Try it, Elphie," she encouraged, "try to fly."

"That rhymes," Elphie mused. She stood up and climbed back to the edge of the cliff. Taking a deep breath, she flapped her ears and pushed off with her hind legs. She soared up into the clouds. She was flying! She flew higher and higher and higher, heading west towards the setting sun.
