She missed him like crazy. Not the Wolverine that everyone knew, but
him, Logan. The one that only a few people got to know. She had known
that one. She had loved that one. It was all for naught though, because it
wasn't enough for him. She should have known that. She should have
recognized the signs, but she had been so into the moments, that she hadn't
thought further than that. It was probably the worst mistake that she had
made. Probably the deepest way she had hurt him. She had forgotten that he
could feel. That he could hurt. For those few stolen moments, she had
treated him like everyone else. She had fallen for the inner man, for
Logan, but he didn't know that. She had never shown him that she wanted the
real Logan. To him, she was someone that he had to protect. His
responsibility. Eventually, she had turned into more and in that
transformation she had hurt him. Hurt him more than Sabertooth or the
soldiers ever had. She had never meant for it to be like that, but it had.
It might have been her pride. Her insecurity. Whatever the hell it was, it had killed them. She had thought that what she gave was enough. She had thought that he knew her feelings. She thought too much. There were moments when he was intensely serious. He would look at her and she felt like he knew her inside and out. But he wouldn't talk about himself. Wouldn't open up. He would explain it to her. He didn't want to tie her down when she had just became touchable. Didn't want to risk their friendship. Didn't want to risk losing her. But she didn't hear it. All of those times that he told her he couldn't fall for her until she was over Bobby. He couldn't give himself until he was sure that she was there to stay. All those times that he said that he wouldn't kiss her until she was sure. All those times he tried to show himself. She heard him, but she didn't get him. She swore that she would never hurt him. She swore that she was over Bobby. She pleaded with him to give her a chance.
Now she knew that he had known better than her. She always knew that he understood her, but for him to know her better than she knew herself was unexpected. When she was completely honest with herself she didn't plan to hurt him. She was over Bobby. How he had picked up on what she didn't realize amazed her. But he did. He was the one that made that final decision that they were over. That he couldn't do this thing that they were doing. He swore that he could be friends with her and be there for her, but that he couldn't risk his heart.
He was the one that distanced himself from her. The one that disappeared for a year. The one that didn't return her calls. But she was the one that ultimately killed them.
She was the one that did what he had predicted. It hadn't been intentional. It had just happened, and as much as she hated when other people used that excuse, in her case it was true. When he had stopped talking to her, she felt like her life was over. She had no one to turn to, and so she did the one thing that he had expected her to do. She went back to Bobby. She needed stability and a friend, hell, she needed love and he'd give it to her, even if he knew that she couldn't give it back. So, she fell back into their pattern. Pretend everything was fine, pretend she was in love.
It worked too. Until the day, he ran into them. The look of utter coldness in his eyes as he brushed past them chilled her to the bone.
Bobby, thankfully, did not recognize him and when Rogue pleaded with Bobby to leave the mansion to get away, he complied as he always did. And pretended not to notice the tear stains on her face when he came to bed.
