Semira's pregnant. It's a shocker to me. It never occurred to me that one woman like her can conceive, although I don't see why not she has all the necessary parts to. I've been her "mate" for a better part of a decade now and there has never been even a inkling of pregnancy. She has been alive for centuries and hasn't conceived once. I have been with intimate with her several times over and she has always been cold and calculating, only smiling when thinking about how to gain more power. She seemed more concerned about what could be then what has actually around her. Her personality had her always moving, always busy, always writing, what have you. But right now she is a quiet and still as can be.
"Things will be okay Semira."
" Leave me Varga." She said in hushed tone.
"I will take care of you and our baby and..."
"Just go. Please."
I paused, she had never bothered with the word please. Someone in her position never had to use it. Her words were law. I quietly left, I didn't want to upset her more than she already was.
The next day is she was walking around with same zest she always has. People couldn't tell yet that there was small heart beat flickering in her stomach. The only thing that gave it away for me besides prior knowledge is that she has been avoiding me.
"Semira we really need to talk."
"No we really don't. There's nothing to talk about it. It will be here in a couple of months and then just like everyone else grow up and things will be back to normal."
"It? Our child is not an it Semira. I know this is the last thing you wanted, but our baby deserves a mother who is going to love them."
"No one deserves anything. The more you go through life the more you will understand that." She began to walk away.
"I know you're hurt deep inside Semira. I know that you probably didn't get the love that you deserved, but you're control of your own happiness now. You're stronger and wiser. You either going to let whomever hurt still have power or choose to let the past go and have better future." She left without ever turning around.
A few months passed and as Semira stomach swelled, she moved slower, and her voice grew quieter. I couldn't tell how she was feeling anymore. She didn't look sad, happy, or even angry. She was walking to council when her water finally broke. The midwife rushed her to the infirmary. The next 7 hours were first filled with moans and groans then eventually screaming. She didn't want me in there I can tell. She doesn't want to me to see her vulnerable, close to tears. I held her hand anyway, never letting go even when she nearly crushed my fingers with her strength. It was time for her to bare down. A few pushes later and the most beautiful baby girl I have ever seen came out. They cleaned her up and tried to hand her to Semira, which she quickly rejected.
"Finish up with me. I want to go to my room." She demanded.
She was frigid. I hated her in that moment. The midwife looked baffled and then sad as she looked down at the little baby girl. She followed through with her orders. Semira quickly left the room soon afterwards not even glancing back. As I held the baby with wide blue eyes in my arms I knew I would do anything to protect her even if it were from her own mother.
I haven't spoken to Semira since our daughter was born a few days ago. I was angry with her for rejecting our daughter and I'm frustrated with myself for not being able to choose a name. I have been indecisive since I was a child. I was about to enter the nursery when I heard a familiar voice.
" You are so beautiful. You deserve so much more than me love." It was Semira holding our baby girl. She was rocking her as she spoke.
"I can't believe you don't have name yet. Your father has always been decisive so I can't say I'm surprised. What about Juliet? It was the name of my very first friend and it means beautiful. It's fitting for you." She kissed her head and then her tiny lips. Juliet pursed her lips much to mine Semira's amusement. No one looking at her now would never think that this women would hold any malice in her. She looked so warm and delicate as she held Juliet. She clearly admired the little soul in her arms.
" I do love her Varga." She startled me when she called my name.
"I do love her." She said again in a hushed tone as she looked up at me.
" I know you do Semira, but you need to show it. She needs her mother. She needs you" She looked away suddenly. Her wide blue eyes staring back at another set of smaller wide blue eyes. After what seemed like an eternity, a single tear drop left the her eye. She had finally let go.
